    86 Fleetwood Engine Swap

    Hi,

I am new to this forum and very new to cadillacs. I was lucky enough to receive a 1986 Fleetwood with a perfect interior and exterior. The trouble is the engine sounds like it will die any day. The rod barrings sounds like they are loose and the thumping sounds is terrifying, it will blow soon. The Fleetwood is not ready to go to car heaven. But I don't know what to do with it? Drop in a new engine for 3 grand.. or just let it go?

Experts, please give me some good advice.

P.S. anyone living in the Vancouver BC Canada region and want a pimp ride, my car is aircared and insured I will get some pictures up tomorrow. willing to let go for 500 CAD. give me a shout.

Which engine is in your car currently? If it's the 307 Olds motor (distributor in the back and an oil fill tube in the front behind the water pump) then an Olds 403 is a bolt-in. An Olds 455 will also go in with relatively little work, though the 455 has a taller deck height that requires different exhaust manifolds and accessory brackets. The Cad 500 uses different motor and frame mounts. Any of these swaps will frag your 200-4R transmission, however.

Low buck? Olds 350 is a GREAT choice. Cheap, plentiful, and can make great power. 403's are getting rare, and 455's too, and you are going to pay a premium for a 455. 425's are good choices, as are 400's.

I would lean towards 350's. They are good engines. Olds is one of the few car companies that knew how to do an engine right for reliability.

I did a 350 swap into my 85 Cutlass to replace the broken 307 and had NO issues, no tricks, worked perfectly. MPG went from 27.3 highway (consistently 24-26) at best to 23.5 with no OD and 2.14's. With 2.56's (tow gear) I was down to 21.5.

A 6L truck LQ4 would be best. The LS1/LS6 cams are too big for that heavy of a beast.
