Transmission Fluid Change Over to Amsoil

Guy's has anyone here done this? I want to change the trans oil over to Amsoil but it's not as easy as just dropping the drain plug and refilling it. How did you guys do it? Is there access to the converter and is there a drain plug in that? This way you get all the oil out....

I hear you for sure... I was just thinking if Amsoil is better I'd change it out. With my mods there is SO much power going through the trans it could only help it out....

What is your opinion based on, shift feel, or something more concrete? In my experience, stock fluids are a Group III synthetic at best and don't hold up well... for long. In my 06 CTS-V (6 sp manual), I drained the stock fluid at 10k miles to replace it with AMSOIL and it had sheared low out of grade. Not sure why the "new" stuff you mention would be any different. To the best of my knowledge, GM is still using the same basestock.

Nothing GM puts in as factory fill is awesome IMO, only a GM tech would say that. The GM ATF Dexron VI is just a petroleum ATF, its not synthetic as many people think. I have the MSDS and its says so right on it. That would make it a group III base stock at best whereas the AMSOIL is a Group IV PAO (poly-alpha-olefin) and those are the best base stocks. Exxon-Mobil is a large producer (among others) of PAO's.

Here is exactly what it says.

    3. Composition/information on ingredients

Mixture of severely hydrotreated and hrdrocracked base oil (petroleum)

Reads almost like a Group II/III blend to me as well.

FYI, as mentioned by Z71, the AMSOIL ATFs all use a Group IV PAO synthetic basestock and are very very resistant to viscosity shear down which I would believe would be a desirable characteristic for a tranny fluid in a car like the new V.

Re: Transmission Fluid Change Over to Amsoil

Trying to change over to amsoil is a PIA, I tried, and first, it takes a lot of fluid, next is where to hook up lines to do a 100% change over is a head scratch-er. I dropped the pan but finding a reliable spot to do a swap was not very intuitive so I just refilled with new atf from the dealership.
