I was considering a 9500ci, but went another route.

After a lot of research, it is pretty obvious that the laser shifters (jammers) that come with the9500ci are pretty poor. The best laser jammer on the market is clearly the Laser Interceptor.

So, as I wanted to know that I had peace of mind with respect to laser protection, there was no doubt - I purchased a Laser Interceptor (haven't installed it yet...the f'ing weather won't warm up!)

I was also in the market for a new radar detector. I really liked the range (sensitivity) of the Escort Redline and the 9500ci (they use the same antenna), but also really wanted the anti-falsing technology and the GPS features that the 9500ci and the 9500ix offered. So, it appeared as though I would either have to accept somewhat less sensitivy and get the 9500ix, or buy the 9500ci and not use the included laser shifters, which essentially resulted in wasted money.

Last Thursday, Beltronics (same company as Escort) released their STi-R Plus unit in North America, and I ordered one as soon as I could. Many expect this to be THE best radar detector on the market. It has the same antenna and sensitivy of the 9500ci / Redline, however it also includes all the anti-falsing technology and GPS features of the 9500ci / 9500 ix. However, it is about 400 bucks cheaper than the 9500ci, as it does not include the laser shifters (the Shifter ZR4 is an optional $450.00 add-on). In addition to the above, the STi-R Plus also has RDR (radar detector rejection) and KA band segmentation that the 9500ci does not, as well as stealth technology (it can't be detected by radar detector detectors), a big plus for those living in / driving through states or provinces where RDs are illegal. Also, the STi-R Plus has much better ramp-up than the Escorts...you get a much better progressive alert as the radar signal increases. One of the big knocks against Escort is their terrible ramp-up...basically you will be driving along and then WHAM! get a full alert = heart attack!

It's your money, but for a tad more than the 9500ci, you can get a Laser Interceptor jammer AND an STi-R Plus, which will give you the best possible protection against laser speed traps, and arguably, the best radar detector available.

The Laser Interceptor is around 600 bucks (a bit less), and the STi-R Plus is basically 1200. The 9500ci is 1600 bucks, so for around another 200 bucks, you can have much better protection than you wold with the 9500ci alone. The STi-R Plus is not shown on Beltronic's web page yet, but many of their authorized retailers have them listed. If you call Beltronic's customer service number, you can purchase directly through them .

You will also need to consider installation fees. The install is pretty basic for both, so if you are at all handy and have ever installed a car stereo, this would be a piece of cake. The only trick is making sure the Laser Interceptor sensors are properly mounted (can't be behind a grill and must be in the proper location (not too low etc.) and square and level). This would also apply to the 9500ci shifters.

Good luck!

I have had the 9500ci installed in my V coupe for 6+ months now and love it. It detects radar a lot further than the K40 installed in our RR and IMO the laser works great. I have not read the reviews or seen the stats on how it compares to the Bell, but I've been in several situations where I know it has worked flawlessly. In one instance, the office was shooting the car with laser over and over, when I got close, I could see the officer look dumbfounded at his laser to see if it was still on or working. As I passed him, he turned around and continued to shoot my vehicle from the rear. I was speeding for a good bit of time he was shooting the vehicle.

FWIW, the radar and laser modules are mounted behind the front bumper and the rear laser is attached to the license plate holes. The system comes with a speaker, LED indicator, LED display and control panel. The speaker is mounted under the driver dash, LED indicator in the dash near the spedo, LED display behind the ash tray cover and the control panel in the center console stack.

Hmm. Yeah, I read about placing the detector behind the bumper cover, but since the detector also detects laser... Dang, might have to slot the grille... Hope it fits under the wreath and crest...

I like the rear parcel shelf idea for the GPS antenna. That's where I placed the antenna for a portable XM receiver in another car and I agree, it would be more discreet.

Thanks for sharing your ideas!

If you have any radar detector questions throw them my way and I will be glad to help you.

I had my installer mount the antenna for my Stir Plus behind my bumper cover. It works awesome there and is protected from the elements of as well as rocks etc.

Of course it can't detect laser mounted there, but I have laser interceptor for that.

The Stir Plus is a beast. Well worth the money
