    Interference or Non-interference engines?

I was watching Motorweek recently and during the Goss' garage segment they were talking about
interference vs non-interference engines. I wasn't able to find the answer on the net about our V's so I
thought most likely some of you guys would probably know which we have. Also, how often is it
recommended to change the timing belt/chain?

    Re: Interference or Non-interference engines?

Definition: An interference engine is a type of 4-stroke internal combustion piston engine in which one or more valves in the fully open position extends into any area that the piston may travel into. By contrast, a non-interference engine is one where the piston does not travel into any area that the valves open into.

So we would have an interference engine because our valves definitely open into the combustion chamber and a bent valve is possible from a valve hitting a piston. Definitely not a good thing though.

4 stroke is also known as the: suck, squeeze, bang, blow to describe the intake, compression, combustion, exhaust event.

These guys already answered this for you but for these factors are why properly installed cams, valve lift specs and other timing issues are critical. Timing sets on every LS1 I've been into were good and tight at over 75K miles. A lot of us just changed them while we were in there for cheap insurance.
