    Engine/Trans Tune in SoCal

Well, I've had the V now for a few weeks and the mod bug is biting me. I just received the KPE CAI and am now thinking about long tube headers, lower and upper pulley, etc. I can do all of the mechanical installation but I am looking for recommendations of a dyno tuning shop in the Los Angeles area. I suppose the best shops will have a lot of vette experience as there are not enough V's around. If I can get a shop identified and can feel comfortable with their knowledge and approach, then I will likely go forward with the mods. Any recommendations and/or personal experience?

Yes, CAT as in "Church Automotive Testing" in Wilmington. They use a Dynapack" dyno and they do all of D3's dynotesting. Look on their website. Shawn is great. And they have done quite a few Cads.

What about RPM in Santa Clarita? I hear they guy there is great, but I can't remember his name. I can ask my buddy as WCCH for his name if you need it.

His name is Charlie Williams at RPM Motors.

Yeah, he'd solid as hell when it comes to LS motors. He's tuned my 2005 V so many times, I can't even count that high. He also did my initial tune on my 2009 V and added 50+ rwhp from his tune alone.

Last I left off, he still frequents A&A every once in a while, but I'm not sure of that status as of now. I think he spends substantially all his time at RPM Motors, Inc.

In any case, Andy at A&A Corvette (located in Oxnard) can tune as well.

There is a guy who was recommended by a member on this forum who works in LA and is supposed to be REALLY good, as good as Charlie per this member, if I recall correctly, but I can't recall his name. Sorry.

If you search this forum, use my name and Los Angeles and you have a good shot, for this gentleman and I were exchanging posts about this tuner.

D3/Church are very good as well; don't hesitate in the slightest going there either.

If I understand correctly, Hennessey now has a shop in Lake Forest, Orange County, so that's probably an option as well.

That's every tuner I've heard of in Ventura/Los Angeles/Orange County, So Cal

I know about Andy @ A&A Corvette in Oxnard as well. He does a lot of supercharged vettes, so I am sure he can do a good job too.

    Re: Engine/Trans Tune in SoCal

OK, here's my take on the SoCal tuners that I am familiar with: All FWIW & IMHO:
Charlie: RPM Motors: Santa Clarita: I met Charlie when he worked for / with Los Angeles Performance Division (LAPD): I liked Charlie, but didn't care for LAPD's tude. I called RPM Motors a few months back for strictly a baseline dyno. After quite a few calls, I was never allowed to talk to Charlie but always got his *business manager*. He told me to call back and he would ask Charlie how much for a baseline dyno run. This went on for about a month, after which time the manager told me that Charlie was not interested in doing only a baseline. I have a hard time supporting someone who won't support me. However, Charlie is one of the best in the biz for vette tuning.
Andy Green: A & A Corvette, Oxnard: Again one of the best in the biz for vettes, don't know how many CTS-V's that they have done, and a little too far for me.
Cunningham Motor Sports: Lake Elsinore area: Again, 1 of the best in the biz in vettes, don't know how many CTS-V's that they have done.
D3: They work strictly on Cads, V1's, V2's, XLR's, how could they not know more about Cads than anybody else in the So Kali area. They have customers from everywhere. Do all of their tuning on a Dynapack. I believe that they also do all of their own work. That is the reason that I recommended them in the 1st place. HTH

    Re: Engine/Trans Tune in SoCal

IMHO, I wouldn't worry about someone being a "Vette" only tuner. In my mind, if they can tune a Vette, they can probably tune a Caddy. They are just too similar when talking about tuning the motor.

And I'd trust, say Andy @ A&A, to build me just about ANY LS block--he's VERY good at Vette/LS motors and dropping the motor in isn't the weakest link--at least to me.

Then again, there IS something to be said about a place that does nothing but Caddys, like D3--that does give one the good-ole warm-fuzzies...

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with Charlie; he must have been very busy or something. He's one hell of a tuner though, just about anything GM related (I wouldn't take, say, a Ford to him to tune... )

Dynamic Tuning Solutions in Reseda. Probably who Luna's referring to or about. I heard that they are also as good as Charlie, but probably from the same peep that Luna heard it from. I don't think that one can go wrong with any of the above tuners, but I still would prefer one that also works on the cars, and mostly on the CTS-V's even though the motor is basically the same.

WCCH is in Reseda, and they didn't mention Dynamic Tuning, fwiw.

Sorry, I got my forums mixed up. My bad (and laziness).

WCCH is West Coast Cylinder Heads, in Reseda. They do a ton of CNC LS cylinder heads, and many of the top shops use them (ask your friends at D3 and A&A).

West Coast Cylinder Heads. WCCH. OK, I know of them, and I know that they do most of the CNC'd heads. And I know that their rep is sound.
I posted quite a ways back about tuners and somebody on this forum advised me of DTS in Reseda.

    Re: Engine/Trans Tune in SoCal

    Hi Guys,

Thanks a lot for all of the responses! I will try out Charlie since he is local to me and if I don't have good vibes, I'll head over to Oxnard which is not far. The main thing I am looking for is GM tuning experience. We've done a lot of mods to Fords but just learning our way in the GM world. Thanks again for the responses - I hope they can help more than just me. Let the mods begin!

    Luna:
Not bragging, luna, but I am on my 5th turbo Buick, and the most important thing that I have learned about turbo Buicks is that they deserve and respond to a turbo Buick specialist best. Also, not all tuners want to or are capable of CTS-V repair. As a general rule, I like to hold 1 person / 1 shop accountable for their sins. When my cars not running right or broken, the last thing that I would like to hear is the good old "I said, you said, she said" crap. Just the ramblings of an old man though. But I do hold a lot of faith in accountability.
