    New diff at 9,000 miles

After two "diff hot" messages on a road trip, on my next service the dealer took a looksee and found a leaky seal. Scoped inside the diff and it looked okay, but upon changing the seal, the fluid down in the bottom had more metal than they liked... and after it was back together they noticed more noise than they liked. So they conferred with GM and had the whole diff replaced under warranty.

Thank you, St. Claire Cadillac. Thank you, Cadillac. No drama, it's just fixed.

    ^^^^^

    And lo spake the 2013 CTS/CTS-V owner's manual, Chapter 9, verse 14:

Follow these recommended guidelines during the first 2 414 km (1,500 miles) of driving
this vehicle. Parts have a break-in period and performance will be better in the long run.
Brakes and tires are 200 miles.

service manager said go easy for 400-500 miles on the replacement then don't worry about it.

Re: New diff at 9,000 miles

I purchased my 2013 Vagon in May of 2013, followed the break-in procedures to the letter and by 1300 miles my diff was beginning to whine at 47MPH and in full howl at 55MPH. I believe some diffs are manufactured with inaccurate tolerances and are going to howl no matter what. I hope when I have mine replaced, I am aiming for spring, I get a good one. Anyone know are these diffs mfg in Mehico? If so, I understand the problem. An extreme lack of quality control, where the cutting tool specs are not calibrated at the proper interval.

    Hello Jinx,

I am sorry to hear that your CTS-V was experiencing a leaky seal regarding your differential. I am glad to hear that it was replaced under warranty and that you did not incur any out of pocket expense for the repair. Please feel free to private message Laura or myself on the forum if you have any further questions or concerns regarding your vehicle. Thank you very much for taking the time to post your experience.

Re: New diff at 9,000 miles

So I've just turned 13k miles on my '12 V-wagon/manual and the gear whine from the differential that I'd been hearing was addressed at the dealer under warranty. I haven't received the car yet, but hopefully this won't be a recurring issue.

Does anyone out there have a definitive answer as to why this happens and if so, is this affecting all V's or just manual versions?

While GM is doing the right thing under warranty I'm wondering if this is something that will make me sell the car after the warranty expires.

OT, but the dealer gave me an SRX4 in the interim....who the hell buys these things???? I know I'm not the demographic, but I'm appalled that it costs 52k with possibly the worst auto transmission I've ever driven. The slushbox in my 98 E320 4Matic wagon is less "slushy".

No idea why it happens but mine has been pretty darn silent for 13,000mi after having it swapped at 4k miles.

We love our SRX. Very comfortable to take a trip or the kids to soccer in. BTW its the most popular vehicle Cadillac sells.

The SRX is a chickmobile, that's why you didn't like it, syk. And multitudes of chicks or their men are buying these things, thus keeping Cadillac solvent enough to make man cars like the V.

Re: New diff at 9,000 miles

I was talking to one fellow at the last V Corral - he was on his 4th diff still within the warranty period (~50K mi IIRC).

He was having so many issues he started to suspect he got his original differential on the third replacement. lol.

Maybe he was over-sensitive, maybe the dealer was over-reacting, or maybe this V owner was just having seriously bad luck. Definitely observe the break in period!
