Locking doors, but leaving car running

So, the past few days when I've run into a store for less than a minute or two (sbux or whatever), I've left the car running, but taken the remote key, and locked the doors by pushing the lock button on the remote. I tested out to make sure the door locks with the engine running, by leaving the keyfob on a ledge 10 feet away and walking up and trying to open the door. It was locked.

So, my question is, if someone where to gain access by breaking the window or whatever would the car be able to put from park to reverse/drive (it's an automatic) without the key fob on the car? I think so, but was just cruious.

yes they could do that, but, isn't that what insurance is for? lol

You can test it, by leaving someone in the car while you leave and have the windows down. It will just complain that a key fob is not found. Once you go and get out of range, it will drive until you shut it off, then it will not allow a restart..

Or you could test it yourself by leaving a window down. I'm sure Jay and Silent Bob will be happy to hold your fob for you.

Yeah, I think you're right. Good idea on rolling the window down and locking it. I wonder if I open the door with it locked by grabbing the inside handle from the outside if the alarm will go off?

I just like leaving the car running and locking the door when I'm just running for a second. Saves ignition cycles and also keeps the interior nice and chilly.

I have the passive lock turned on in my car. My wife usually sits in the car when we stop for gas or whatever. But then after sitting there for a minute she decides she wants to get out or just ask a question or whatever and opens the door. Sets the alarm off every time. So yes, if you lock the door with the window down and try to open the door with the inside handle without the key it will set the alarm off.

If you hit the unlock button on the inside in this same situation, that will not unlock the door.

I read the compressor is under the most strain when the car is in park / at idle at a light.

With the autos, can't you just lock it and hit your remote start when you walk away, or does the remote start also unlock your door(s) when it starts?

Remote start doesn't unlock your doors, in fact, you have to lock the doors before remote starting for the remote start to work.
