Is there any way to check for codes without using special tools or equipment in the V2?
No. My former '98 C5 Corvette had a diagnostic tool build into the Options menu that would allow the owner to scan and reset codes. Wish all cars had that!

Just go to an auto parts place like napa, or advanced auto and they check them for free.
Torque app and Bluetooth OBD-II reader. No brainer.
