    Engine Noise

I have a 2009. Cadillac CT-V and am hearing a flapping noise in the engine while driving. It sounds like a playing card in bicycle spokes. This noise also occurred when the vehicle displayed low oil and the PSI was low.

The oil was changed 4,000 miles ago and there is 47% engine oil life. Any idea what the noise is?

    Thanks,

    Charlie

    Charlie,
If you would like to send me your VIN number I can look further into this for you and see what the possibilities could be. Have you had it looked at by your local dealer, yet?

Stupid question but did you check your oil level?

    Re: Engine Noise

Thanks for everyone's help. Drove it to the dealership and checked the oil. I was down three quarts. I. September, the low engine message came on and the car was down four quarts. Is the low engine light accurate?

The car is burning a quart of oil every 1,250 miles. It is at Lindsay Cadillac in their engine shop to determine if the engine can be repaired or replaced. Very disappointed because I thought these engines were bulletproof.

How far should the technician dive into the engine to see potential damage?

    Will keep everyone updated.

^^^ - Is it burning oil, or losing it? My oil level would go down consistantly when the car was new. Finally had it checked out at the dealer and they found an oil-pan gasket leak. They dropped the pan and replaced the gasket under warranty, and now the car uses very little oil. There was never any obvious indication of the leak, (no puddles in the garage, etc.), but when up on a lift, there were obvious signs of oil leaking from somewhere.

    Re: Engine Noise

I had the same thing happen. I thought my noise was the S/C rattle, at first, but it may have been oil starvation. I wasn't down that low but it was over 2 quarts. I had the oil pan leak but didn't get that taken care of until this past June. Between the first issue(spring of '10) and this June, and since, I have watched the oil level like a hawk. No problems since. But I'm assuming you heard this...

BTW, I recorded that early in '10. If you're worried about damage and longevity, I have since gone to Behe for headers, intake, pulley and a tune. I have tracked it a handful of times in hot temps, driven it hard and autocrossed it, too. Obviously, that may not translate from one car to the next. Hopefully, it does...

Returned from the dealership and the there are grooves inside the number two cylinder. The tech is dropping the engine today to find out if the root cause of the grooves. Nonetheless, the car will receive a new engine, specifically a long block.

that is the exact noise when the car was down about four quarts.

See my last post. Cadillac authorized the dealership to tear into the engine. This was after I went for a ride with the technician and he heard the noise and saw no oil on the dipstick.
