If the change interval is 50K, why are so many people messing with the fluid WAY before that? Have there been ANY cases of differentials locking up or whining due to bad oil/no oil/low oil?

    cdog,

Ok, you got me. I just like going to see my dealer and paying $200 cause I got nothing better to do.
    JK

I did it cause some vehicles appear to be low on diff oil from factory and wanted some piece of mind.

Re: Rear end fluid change - not happy

Bought Amsoil and the hand pump to go with it(and yes, it is my bag, baby!). Changed my fluid last year before a couple of track days and put in 1.5 quarts of the fluid.

Did it again a couple of weeks ago and the fluid looked a little low. Filled it up again with 1.5 quarts of Severe Gear and additive(Amsoil recommends it for '09+ Vs...

So can the level get low after a full fill? hmm...

...$200 is cheap insurance. You figure if you're low on fluid from the factory, mod the V a little, than proceed to bust your rear diff I have a feeling GM wont give you a free diff under warranty. And hell, how many V' owners stay stock ?

You can buy it from an Amsoil dealer. I bought mine from C66 Racing here on the forums. SUPER easy to use...

A few questions and I'll leave you alone...

What fluid do you use for the diff (Amsoil & additive)
Do you do your own tranny? If so, procedure and fluids used as well.

If I can avoid having the tranny and diff done at the dealer, I can save alot of dough. I've been having them do it every 8,000 miles just to check on everything.
I know it is overkill but I sleep better.

    thanks big guy

Haven't done the tranny yet. wut?

But the diff is the easiest thing you can do on your V. Amsoil Sever Gear 75W-90. Add Amsoil additive. It takes longer to back the V up on ramps and get underneath than it does to empty and refill.

Re: Rear end fluid change - not happy

I had the dealer change mine - they changed it with the old stuff and said they added the additive.... then I started to get rear end whine. They then said it had a Bulletin out, so they changed the fluid to the new fluid and said the noise was gone. Well - I drove it and it wasn't gone, so they just got done changing the whole rear diff out. It is quiet again!! It came filled from the factory and I have the Amsoil Severe Gear with the Additive sitting in the garage. I am wondering if I should change it right away or not??

Is the Mobil 1 LS stuff of any relation to the OEM Dexron LS oil? It's product description specificlly states (and I quote)

Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90 contains special friction modifiers designed for limited slip-type differentials. In most applications, the addition of special LS (limited slip) additives is not required. For axles requiring the highest level of limited-slip performance, OEM specific LS additives can be added to this fluid
Sort of self-explanitory, but I'd rather buy this stuff @ $8.99/quart than $22.69 from the Dealer.

Re: Rear end fluid change - not happy

For the time it takes to change, I'd eat the cost of the fluid and do it now. Just for all the hassle you've endured, why not? as for the Mobil 1, Amsoil reevaluated the Severe gear for our app and changed to us needing the additive. Since the Mobil 1 guide says no additive is needed for MOST applications, I'd tend to think we may very well be one of those few applications in light of Amsoil changing their thoughts on it...

BTW, I was getting some chatter on the Severe Gear without additive. So far so good with it...
