Torque converter on a DSG transmission?

I was reading on cadillacfaq, that the 6 speed Tremec TR6060 has a torque converter? I thought by definition the DSGs had clutches, but no torque converter?!

As far as I know, the TR-6060 is simply a beefed-up T-56. Where'd you read it had a torque converter?

    Yep - that's the manual 6-speed. Not a DSG.

A DSG doesn't use a torque converter either as far as I know.

Re: Torque converter on a DSG transmission?

The '09 CTS-V comes with two transmission options:
    - traditional 6-speed manual (TR6060) which does not have a torque converter. It's used on the Shelby GT500, Viper and upcoming Corvette ZR1.
    - traditional 6-speed automatic (6L90) which does have a torque converter

Yes by using the words traditional I'm downplaying some really good technology, but it looks like that most car manufacturers are switching to DSG (double clutch) technology. I'm hoping that the '10 V model will bring us a DSG option. DSG's do not use torque converters.

Have been an advocate of automatics for many years. Matter of fact, I've argued MANY times in favor of them in drag cars purely for lower ET's but...
If I'm not rowing gears myself, I have no use for a sports car/sedan. I know it means the car may actually be slightly slower but IMO, that's just part of what makes a sports car, a sports car. And that's why I am generally no fan of a car that has to have all kinds of electronics to be able to be driven at it's limits.

Most of those quick shifting gear boxes are in torqueless cars! Usually under 400 lbs ft.

Torque coverter will stay for some time until technology catches up. The DSG is super fast and entertaining watch the tachometer zing between shifts.

Bugatti has DSG, Nissans new GTR has DSG, Porsche is preparing DSG, BMW M series is about to release DSG. Mercedes Benz SL63 is now produced with DSG.

Would be insane if the CTS V got DSG but GM produces the best slush boxes so its going to be a long time before they switch over..

Too bad ..IMO as it would be cool if it did offer dSG.

Re: Torque converter on a DSG transmission?

Good news as when it first released here in the states in 2005 DSG was only in Audi A3 1.8t. Might be available in more VAG cars soon.

I expect more to get it and just like automatic transimission when first introduced could take much abuse.

DSG is fast, and great about 5% of the time. The only one I drove was VW's (which from what I read, is the best currently on the market.) It was fine when you are on it, but at a leisurely pace, it lurches at low speeds. And the take off seems shaky. Hopefully future generations of DSG will have computers with better clutch-slipping skills.

I'm not so sure GM is "all that" in the automatic trans market these days. I've always favored ZF over anything GM does, and I "think" GM has at least used some or are using some ZF transmissions now.
