    Touchup paint

So I have a small scratch on the door. Dealer doesn't have Crystal Red, but they showed me a bottle. It looks liked a regular touch up paint with a little brush, kind of like nail polish bottle. He said it was $15. I told him my VIN, asked if it was a Cadillac, and then he said it's double. WTF? For a small ass little half ounce bottle. Whatever. I found it online for $15 and change but shipping is flat rate of $10. Maybe if I email they will do first class mail for a few bucks? But wait, there's more. There's a guy that has a base coat and a top coat. Apparently same part number. But it looks like a ball point pen. Now this is getting a little too confusing for touch up paint. Find a site that has pens of this stuff for $13. But they recommend a clear coat as well. Touch up paint should be touch up paint! Now there's base coat, top coat, and clear coat? wtf? It's a small little scratch not a ****ing bumper. Ugh!

maybe that is why the paint is called Tricoat. makes sense but sucks cant get easy touchup. This car has the thinnest paint ive had on a car. im scared to bump into it half the time.

Especially aggravating when they charge a grand extra for it. It is a sweet color though. I really struggled when I ordered my coupe- wanted the red but my 09 sedan was red, and i just couldn't see getting another car same color.

Oh well, there is always 2013.

    Re: Touchup paint

This needs to be buffed pretty good and then some touch up paint would make it look good. Yes, and bumper plugs too! But those holes look better than that obscene black bracket. And the nerve to charge $15 for it too!

****ing bumper is annoying. Clip worn or possible undisclosed accident?

And the scratch in question. Small dent too.

That second picture makes me wonder if the bumper has been off and someone didn't align it properly or banged it putting it back on.
I am guessing from your comments that you bought it used? NO?

Regardless, those photos are very disturbing. Good luck in your search for the paint. May want to take the car to a paint place and see what they can do. Make sure they can do a good job of color match.

    How did that scratch/dent occur?

    Re: Touchup paint

I touched up my buddy waynes crystal red v from a rock chip. The touchup is a base and a clear. We dabbed in the base and let it dry then put 2 coats of thick clear on with 24 hours between to let it dry. Then I wet sanded it with 4000 grit abrillon pads and buffed back out. He had the clear bra put on and you can hardly see it. If we put one more layer of clear on, it would have been invisible.

    Re: Touchup paint

I'm not that much of a fanatic. I think buffing and some touch up paint for the bumper would do it good. And a little touch up paint for the scratch and I'll be good there too. Yes, I bought it used.

I guess gone are the days where you can just get one of these, circa year 2000!

    Re: Touchup paint

I bought some Dr. Colorchip touch up paint to address chips etc. in my black raven. It works very well. There is also the Langka system you could try. Both are much better than the standard touch up paint process, but not as involved as Evil_C5's process.

    Re: Touchup paint

Guys, here is an article on the proper way to do a touch up and where to get the materials... http://www.autopia.org/forum/guide-d...one-chips.html

    From the article:
    1. Sand area to remove any rust and enable paint to ‘key’
    2. Clean area with isopropyl alcohol
    3. Apply a rust inhibitor (POR-15)
    4. Over fill the chip by painting thin coats and allow to dry, repeat
    5. Wet-sand the area with 3000 grit finishing paper
    6. Polish wet-sanding marks with suitable polish
    7. Apply paint protection

    Re: Touchup paint

Is the clear-coat included with the kit tinted red? Crystal Red Tintcoat has red in the clearcoat to make the color richer. That's why it's an extra-cost color, and also why it costs more to fix. The touch-up paint should ideally have the same tinted clearcoat to really match the paint properly.

Wannago, I have the black raven. I went to colorchip's website but when I pull up the 2011 cts, they have two black colors. Which one did you use that matched well?

    TIA, phill

    Phil,

    My jar says 8555.

This is what my electronic receipt shows:

    41/WA8555
    Black
    2009
    Cadillac
    CTS

    Perfect match!
