Anyone try LEDs for Front Turn Signals and DRLs?

    Hey Guys,

One thing that has been bothering me about the CTS-V is the ugly standard looking incandescent bulbs GM/Cadillac uses for the front turn signals and DRLs.

With Audi, Mercedes and BMW all going with full on bright LEDs on the front end of their vehicles, why can't GM/Cadillac do this for their luxury line-up? They did LED taillights and then left the rest of the exterior and interior with standard incandescent bulbs. This is unacceptable for an American luxury brand. Why is GM always late to the technology party? I see Audis with their awesome white LED DRL strips on their headlamps and wonder when GM will get their act together and put them on the Cadillacs to compete? Audi led the way and then Mercedes has now followed suit. It is just a matter of time before every other luxury automaker goes full LEDs on the front ends.

I was browsing the 2007+ Escalade forum on this site and a lot of guys there have gone full LEDs on the front end.

Have any of you tackled the front turn signals and DRLs with LEDs? I looked up the bulbs part numbers on the Sylvania website and it shows the CTS-V's front turn signal bulb as a 5200 and the DRL as a 5201. From what the Escalade guys have found, the 5202 LED bulbs will fit the 5201 sockets that both our Vs and the newer Escalades are equipped with.

I was thinking of trying it, but wanted to know if anyone has done it successfully and if so, which LED bulbs did you go with that fit the front end.

Another good question is how do you get to the actual front turn signal and DRL sockets to change out the bulbs?

I agree, LEDs up front look wonderful. On my 2009 Lexus IS250, I swapped in LEDs up front (shocking it didnt come with them, also). Wonderful improvement. There should be an equivalent LED to just swap in, might also have to add an LED rectifier.

If GM throws on all the extra stuff Audi, etc have, then the car would cost the same as them.

I'd rather have an affordable car than "unacceptable" incandescent bulbs. But, your wallet may be bigger than mine.

GM is late to the technology party? Really? Our cars ride great for big cars because of Magnetic Ride Control which GM developed perhaps a decade ago. GM is also the leader in plug in hybrids as well as Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles. So they cut corners to save a few bucks by not using LED's everywhere, big deal. I'll take a better ride over fancy lights any day. To each their own though.

    I had a 2006 CTS-V for about a year and 10K miles.

I guess nobody has done LEDs on the front end as of yet.

I also really want to do this. When I drive around in the daytime, I turn off the light control and put on the fog lights. By doing this, only the fogs are on and that vertical blue bar. I hate the look of those yellow dull DRL's.

I was kidding. To me, the V2 is such a bump in jewel-like qualities that I was surprised of your complaint...

I do the exactly same thing. First thing I do once the car is started is to kill the yellow DRLs. First thing I did when I got my V2 was swap out the fog bulbs so they would be a closer match to the LED bars.

I really wanted to swap out the DRL bulbs, but after two attempts to just get to the bulbs you damn near have to remove the bumper to get to the DRLs and turn signal bulbs. I just do not see an easy way to get to the bulbs. Wonder how much it cost for the service department to change just one DRL or turn signal bulb? Because from what I see it's going to cost us a lot of $$$ in labor just to have a single bulb replaced.

Yeah, it's nice you can turn off the DRLs easily without doing the surgery on the V1, although that wasn't a big deal...

Re: Anyone try LEDs for Front Turn Signals and DRLs?

I had a customer switch them over and all the turn signals flashed quicker. I was told because of the electrical draw going through the relay...

I have not done one myself... Shawn,

why don't you tackle this one first.

    Scott,

I was kind of thinking that the car would need a load equalizer.

    I gotta do some research.

    Thanks for the info guys!
