Battery Disconnect

Remove this ad
I was looking at the battery in the trunk yesterday.

Silly question ..

What's the proper procedure to disconnect the negative lead?

There is a black rubber covered lever that looks like its locked into place. I can slide to out to the opening, but it does not release or move up or anything obvious.

I'm used to the older cars with the locking nut to loosen, but don't see a nut on this one.

Is there some special tool you have to use, or am I just not seeing it? I don't want to exert any excessive force and break something, so I just slid it back into locked position.

It's probably very obvious, I'm just being cautious.

Thanks..

Re: Battery Disconnect

So I suppose.....We shouldn't disconnect the battery ( like in the old cars) to reset the computor? I know I did this a couple of times with my 300. It solved some of my minor problems.

I have read here that with battery failure on the CTS's that "things" need to be reset? Is there some kind of a list?

Re: Battery Disconnect

Leave it alone and worry about it after 100K if you still have the car. Unhooking the battery Will require you to reset several components. If you have a dead battery sometime call the dealer to pick it up and fix it.

Re: Battery Disconnect

09CTS4AWD- While I agree with everyone on here that you should not disconnect your battery for no reason at all; you did ask how to disconnect your battery. This forum is about asking and answering questions and helping others. You did not ask "Should I disconnect my battery?"

So, here's what you do with that black "tab". Lift up and swing it to the right (while lifting it up). When this tab is loosened, you should be able to just slide the connector off the terminal. You should not need to apply excessive force at all. If so, then consult your dealer.

Don't let everyone scare you into not disconnecting your battery if you need to. When/if you do disconnect your battery, be sure to read your owner's manual for instructions how to properly connect your battery and reset everything. It's really not that scary; if it was truly dangerous, the battery would be inaccessible. Just use common sense and follow the owner's manual; it's there for a reason!

WOW.... Good answer.

I'd hate to be in a situation where the battery went dead and I needed a jump and was afraid to. 'Cause I really don't like tow trucks and there pricing! I always carry jumper cables for me or thee! In fact I thought it was a cool idea to have the battery in the trunk, easier to get and give a jump if need be.

( No, I do not jump everyone...just family if need be. )

There are jump points under the hood.. no need to get into the trunk.

Re: Battery Disconnect

If you read the owners manual it states to only jump from the engine compartment. 2008 page 5-45.

Re: Battery Disconnect

Close the trunk, close the hood and leave the battery alone.
