Apple cuts copy protection and prices on iTunes

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Apple Inc. (AAPL) (AAPL) is cutting the price of some songs in its market-leading iTunes online music store to 69 cents and plans to begin selling all tracks without copy protection.

At the Macworld trade show Tuesday, Apple's top marketing executive, Philip Schiller, said iTunes songs would come in three pricing tiers: 69 cents, 99 cents and $1.29, depending on the recording company they come from.

He also said Apple worked with all the major record labels to get songs free of "digital rights management" technology that limits people's ability to copy songs or move them to different devices.

Not only did they lower the price, but you can now remove the DRM from old songs you purchased. What this means for CTS owners is that if you were locked in to the ipod with the CTS because of the DRM on songs you purchased, you can now use a thumb drive once the DRM is removed (for a fee of course!)...

Awesome! Hopefully they implement an update to iTunes that removes DRM from previous tracks!

This is awesome, but I wonder how much it's going to cost me to remove the DRM from the assloads of music already on my iPod?

Probably about .30 cents a song...I know, thats rough...you have to pay again for something you already bought..

Take a look at a program called Noteburner (google it...)...It will allow you to batch remove the DRM from a lot of music at once...I have over 900 purchased tracks! Basically it puts a virtual cd-rw drive on your PC and has iTunes burn the music to the virtual CD drive, noteburner then imports that virtual CD as any format you like without any DRM but includes track info...a very simple procedure..

However, you are losing some quality going from Protected ACC to CD to MP3...but I'm OK with it..

I'll wait and celebrate to see how many actually are the lower price.....vice the $1.29 one.......Ive been dumping from Walmart download side for cheaper than Itunes recently for both albums and individual songs....that play fine on the Ipod.....
