audio system question re: searching artists on the iPod

been a while since i've been here and have been meaning to ask. i did a quick search on this topic and hadn't seen anything...apologies in advance if i'm wrong.


08 cts, fully loaded, 30 gig iPod classic w/over 4600 songs


my dilemma : when playing the iPod, i use the main dial to search for songs/artists. if i'm in a playlist with only 100 or so songs, it's a viable way to search...simply turn the dial and within a couple of cranks, you can get from the "A's" to the "G's" in no time.

my question is regarding the overall iPod search...with over 4600 songs, it's gonna take more than 20 cranks of the dial to get from the "A's" to the "D's".

is there a quicker way that i don't know about that get's me from the "A's" to the "M's" without having to turn the dial like a hundred or so times?

ON the side of the screen there is the bar that show how far down the list you are. You can touch the bar at a location(say the end) and it takes you to that spot. Makes iPod navigation so much faster.

unfortunately, your suggestion doesn't work on my system...i tried sliding the 'slider' up and down and it doesn't respond to touch...also, i tried just tapping down towards the bottom of the line and the slider stayed right were it was...the only touch commands that responded were the up and down arrows.

This is interesting. After reading Jerome's post, I finally remembered to try this myself. Works well, actually. You can't actually "slide" it like a scroll bar in an MS Window. But, touching a finger above or below the position indicator in the slider will make it jump to that part of the list. Now, I found I was most successful if the action was more of a press rather than a tap. You may want to give it another shot.

Boy, I would love for that to work. I am have 08 CTS (purchased 2/08) and that does not seem to work for me. Can someone that this works for explain in detail what they are doing? Maybe I need a software upgrade? On that, I am confused. I know there is an update disc you can buy, but is there also a system update I should get from the dealer? Finally, is anyone aware of any third-party software/firmware mods that are available? For example, i would love to pick an artist and see the albums (not just songs) for that artist, i.e. search albums by artist. Second, I would love for album art to be displayed on the screen. I would be surprised if there isn't as isn't it a windows based system?

I, too, would like to see such upgrades. GM's Ipod interface is one of the best I've seen in a car - but it could still stand to be better. FWIW - mine is a 2009, but I'm not aware of any changes to the Ipod interface from the 08's.

I too would like to be able to change the ordering of songs on my HDD. Especially would like to select artist then album. I imagine a firmware fix would take care of that. Anyone hear about any planned updates? Cheers all...
