Best Tip for Cleaning Headliner?

Remove this ad
Anyone have any good tips for how to spot clean the light colored headliner? I noticed while detailing this weekend that there are some dirty spots on the driver side headliner and all over the driver sun visor, know it must have been there upon delivery, but would prefer to clean myself. Also, would like to not worsen the situation by staining or discoloring. Any pointers are appreciated!

Re: Best Tip for Cleaning Headliner?

Try this:

Warm water/vinegar solution mixed 6:1 (6 parts distilled water to 1 part vinegar). Spot spray the spot and blot dry with a clean white cotton cloth. You'll have to reapply a few times to work out the stain--let it dry, and re-apply if necessary. You need to take your time with headliner stains. They can be tedious.

For more aggressive stains (grease), use the same solution, but use an All-Purpose Citrus cleaner in place of the vinegar.

You need to treat the spot with care (i.e. don't try to rub or brush out the stain).

Re: Best Tip for Cleaning Headliner?

I had to clean up some greasy fingerprints off the B piller and used a clean rag and some GM glass cleaner. Took it right out.

Re: Best Tip for Cleaning Headliner?

i had 2 smudge marks on delivery...my daughter had pointed them out about 2 weeks after i'd taken delivery...both spots interestingly enough were on the cloth liners in spots where the pieces seem to be joined together....all i did was blast spray the affected areas about 3 or 4 times and leave it be for about 2 minutes...then with a clean rag, i scrubbed the heck out of it and it came out...i didn't bother blotting it but i did rub the heck out of it in a circular fashion...came out no worries...no discoloration, no fading.

fyi - the stuff i used can be purchased at any grocery store...it's eco friendly too...i just put a call into my wife to give me the name of the product...i swear by it....we keep an ample supply stocked

last year, at a dinner party in our home, my buddy spilled about a quarter of a wine glass of red wine onto our newly upholstered SUEDE couch...needless to say, we were mortified...HE was mortified...wife got the stuff out, didn't bother with the spray, just poured a good portion out of the bottle onto the affected areas, waited for it to set, rubbed the crap out of it and it all came out...truth.

i'll post the stuff tonite if i don't hear from her before days end.

Re: Best Tip for Cleaning Headliner?

I'd bet it's either Folex or Kids & Pets. Both work very well also.

p.s. That might be the most distracting avatar EVER. Well done

Re: Best Tip for Cleaning Headliner?

Actually ended up using windex, recommended by Dealer and it took most of it off the headliner. Took it to my excellent dealer today and they agreed to replace the soiled sunshade as it was that way at delivery.

A couple of weeks after I received my CTS4 I noticed an inch-long blue ink mark on the headliner, next to the driver side sunvisor. I used a small amount of Turtle Wax "OXY POWER OUT!" upholstery cleaner on the mark, and the ink came out immediately and completely, without staining or discoloring. Really impressive. My wife mentioned that she uses this product whenever she finds any sort of stain on the carpet or upholstery in the house, and it has always worked great, better than anything else she's ever tried. That's all I had to hear!
I've since used the same stuff on a couple of dirty spots that managed to get on to the headliner (probably during the car's first service visit to the dealer), and the marks came right off with the first wipe.
