| | Cadillac Owners Fanatic Cadillac(s): Cadillac | | | | | What 5.1 DVD's have you listened to so far? I've been trying to get at least one or two different 5.1 disc in my car every week. So far, I've listened to:
Doors - LA Woman
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
Beatles - Love
Eagles - Hell Freezes Over
Roy Orbison - Black & White Night
Donald F-a-g-e-n; The Nightfly, Kamakiriad, Morph The Cat
Steely Dan - Two Against Nature
Steely Dan - Gaucho
This sound system totally rocks. I just wish that the HDD could rip the 5.1 audio content. That would be more valuable to me than the current setup. If I could fill up the HDD with 5.1 tracks, that would just kick. Then, plug in a 4 gig memory stick or iPod into the USB port for all the stereo tracks you can handle. But I'm not complaining. Just making a suggestion for future model years.

Beatles: Love (CD)
The Eagles: Live from Melbourne (DVD)
Pink Floyd: Pulse (DVD) (currently in my player and by far the most enjoyable 5.1 experience) |

I'm also interested in this, but specifically for the non-Nav 5.1 Audio system (U2S). I believe this system only plays DVD-Audio and 5.1 CDs -- will not play the audio portion of DVD video discs. I've had a very hard time finding much of anything in this category in stores or the few online places I've looked. I'm hesitating to buy anything as a result. I know the one 5.1 DVD video disc I already have does not play audio-only on this system (Eagles Hell Freezes Over), so with this reference only DVD-Audio discs work. |

I thought that i could just throw in a DVD out of the house and it would play only the music. It does not. I have been reading the post and see that I have to by a DVD. I am kind of new to this world.....do the cd's that I buy that have the 5.1 say that on the cover? What I am asking....what do I look for that plays in Cad?
Thanks for the help. |

Note I have the Nav with 40-gig HDD audio system in my car.
I decided to purchase The Beatles "Love" CD & DVD-Audio Disc set, which was about $24.00. In my CTS I found that the Beatles Love DVD-Audio sounds great... marginally better-sounding than the accompanying CD disc... but I have a couple of gripes.
One problem is that the vocals on most tracks are distinctly detached/distant - not nearly loud enough, and seem to be relegated to rear seat duty as far as the vocal "placement" is concerned. I don't know if that is what George Martin & Giles Martin (producers of "Love") intended with the DVD-A disc, or if this actually represents a problem with my CTS' audio system. In any case, the included CD disc has no such problem (the vocals are as they should be, in every respect).
The second problem is with track "run-in" (for lack of a better term). On the CD disc, one track flows into another, without any gap(s) between tracks. Really fantastic editing and mixing by the producers. The entire CD flows from beginning to end, without any audible gaps between tracks. With the DVD-A disc playing in my CTS there is a sudden and very noticeable gap between each track, and the bridging bits that are supposed to be there are totally absent. Something's not right, as the same DVD-A disc plays fine on my home 5.1 surround system. If there is a setting that needs to changed in the CTS to fix this problem, I am unaware of where it resides. The system operator's manual makes no mention of it.
I've discovered that pre-recorded DVD-A's are generally rare, and that most store clerks have no idea what you're talking about when you ask about what DVD-A's they might have. You're on your own finding DVD-A's. I suspect the best way to locate & purchase DVD-A's is via the internet.
For info, The Beatles "Love" disc set I purchased has the following miscellaneous info printed on the exterior sleeve:
"Dolby Surround"; "dts entertainment"; "DVD Audio"
DVD DISC FEATURES AUDIO CONTENT ONLY AND PLAYS ON ALL DVD PLAYERS.
* PCM STEREO * DTS 5.1 * DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1
TO ACCESS THE ADVANCED RESOLUTION DVD-A OPTION A DVD-AUDIO PLAYER IS REQUIRED.
Based on my initial experience with this first DVD-A disc I will not be going out of my way to obtain more of them. Regular CD's sound just fine in my CTS.

Regarding the LOVE 5.1 mix, are you sure you don't accidentally have "rear seat 5.1" selected as opposed to "front seat 5.1"? That would definitely make a difference in the imaging and that's what it sounds like as you describe it. I don't get the sense that the vocals are distant or are coming from the back seat at all.
BTW, I received a call from Cadillac today inquiring about the various features of the car and if I had any questions. At the end of the call, I was asked for suggested inprovements. I mentioned tying in the seat recall function back to the ignition switch instead of the opening door, a larger HDD drive and the ability to rip 5.1 audio to them as well. I also told him that it was a tad misleading to tout a 40 gig HDD in which only 9 gig was allocated for music storage. |

Re the LOVE 5.1 mix... good point, but no.. front seat 5.1 is definitely enabled. If I choose rear seat 5.1 the imaging changes considerably as you mention, but the distant vocal problem becomes even worse (at least from the driver's seat listening position). I believe there is a problem with the 5.1 system in my CTS. I'm guessing that one or more of the 6 channels in the 5.1 system is not working (or not working properly), and it is affecting how the vocals are presented, at least with the Beatles LOVE 5.1 mix. No such detectable problem though with regular CD's or music played via the HDD, XM, FM, etc. I'm going to have the dealer check out the audio system when I bring my CTS in for its next scheduled service.
Playing a 5.1 DVD-A disc provides an excellent qualifying test of the 40-gig audio system (Nav or non-Nav) in the CTS, and I encourage others to do the same to detect any problems.
Re the call you had from Cadillac... thanks for sharing that info. I agree with all your suggested improvements. |
