Old rule, no longer relevant. You can do it every 3 months/3000 miles if you want, but it's just a waste of money, IMHO.

For CTS owners, look at page 5-19 of the owner's manual for more info.

that's a forty year old rule based on fifty year old technology, and applicable to severe duty use. even in the bad old days normal use allowed 5000 miles between oil changes, and filters were changed at every other oil change.
if you think your filter is dirty then change it. that's exactly what I did, at 4000 miles.

Re: How often r u changing the oil in DI?

I plan on using the same schedule as on my 04 CTS. Oil change at 6000, filter at 3000. Worked for my 01 Impala as well on Mobil 1, although I didn't change the filter at 3000. Too messy.

Wow, its funny, the guy actually told me the filters don't have to be replaced as often as the actual oil. Going forward, I'm going to listen to the system. I was paranoid because I received 2 check engine lights for the same exact issue in the same week. Is it possible on the DI CTS to check the oil levels myself without popping off that engine bay cover? If so, I think I'll just check the level and top off when I need to and go by the DIC.

I thought the filter cartridge idea was a step backwards - the first thing we did on the old small block was replace the bolt on setup with a spin on filter adapter - but having the filter element on top makes it a lot easier to change independently of the oil with very little mess.
I would say the factory filter should be changed early on to get rid of manufacturing and break-in debris. There should not be any but you'll sleep better.
The dipstick is readily accessable without removing the sound deadener cover.
