Certainly it's alright to bring in Towels that people get paid a $1 a day to make! What's wrong with that?
Thousands of "high paid" workers in North and South Carolina were unemployed as Fieldcrest and Canon went out of business.
When will we learn? |
Learn what? That making squares of cloth is a core American competency? Blaming the fate of Pillowtex (the company that bought Cannon/Fieldcrest) on free trade agreements is a red herring. At some point we need to recognize that we can't protect every commodity market and that our citizens are better served by being employed elsewhere.
I prefer the approach that GM took with the CTS -- build a car that's better than those offered by the foreign competition and thereby use market forces to draw customers back into the fold. When I bought a CTS, lowering the foreign trade deficit and funding benefits for American employees were bonus points.
