Cadillac Forums: Reconfirm on the fuel tank capacity
I want to see when the low fuel warning lights comes on and ran twice low on fuel. The warning did come on and I put approximately 16 gallons of fuel...So there was approximately 2 or less gallons left….I would prefer 3 gallons and 21 23 gallons tank but I can live with it.
The gauge and the computer appears to be quite accurate…

I've run past it several times. Refills have range between 16 and 16.5 gal. So pretty much in line with what you said.
The dealer told me that the fuel indicator display would not be very accurate at first until the car learned my driving habits.
I typically run mine until the low fuel indication appears on the driver information center, and then probably no more than 10 miles after that. My typical refill is just over 15 gallons. I have the non-DI, non-AWD model -- don't know if there are any differences here.
To those of you that run your tank down until the warning appears.....Do any of you realize that it is a very bad idea to run your tank down that low before refilling? You are sucking all the gunk that is accumulates on the bottom of the tank into your fuel system...not a very good idea....
If this car has gunk at the bottom of the tank in 3-4 months, it will never last for 3-4 years. I've opened gas tanks that were 10-15 years old and they were as clean as a whistle.

And where do you think the fuel pick up is located? At the top of the tank? Not. It is not good to run the tank empty, that will screw up the injectors.
I suppose if you purchased the car you wouldn't want to run it to empty every time. However, with a leased car that you're not planning on buying, I wouldn't think that would be something you'd care about.

Been doing this most of my driving life (~30 yrs) with so far no ill effects. Of course I don't usually keep a car more than 3-4 years . And yes, I'm leasing mine now, which means worst case 3yrs from now I'll be driving a 2011 CTS!
I only fill the tank when the light appears and have been doing so for 10+ years. I have never had a problem. I am willing to bet the cost to a person due to time lost stopping for a fill up every 1/2 tank far out weighs the cost (if any) of repairs required by filling up the tank only when the light comes on. Is there an economist in the house?
