I find myself running the tank pretty low (have had the warning notice come) and never seem to get more than 15 gallons pumped.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry much about pulling in bad fuel either, especially given that there's a fuel filter downstream, and major oil companies probably have pretty good processes to remove sediment anyways.

I've heard that a low tank is harder on the fuel pump because it relies on the gas for cooling, but I dunno if that's true or not.

That's true.

If you want to run good gas there are two things you can do.
Go to this site and learn about top Tier Gasoline
http://www.toptiergas.com/
I never run anything except Top Tier.

And never buy gasoline at a low volume station.

Re: Reconfirm on the fuel tank capacity

The gunk or dirt isn't the real problem because of the sock/filter at the pump but the lack of fuel burns up the pump from heat or lack of fluid for lubrication.
Just re-fill when you get low or you will be buying a new fuel pump.

And my (leasing) mentality has me buying usually the cheapest option (sometimes BP, sometimes Sam's Club, sometimes, Meijer, sometimes Gas America, sometimes Speedway). I may have different habits if I were to buy an instant classic and plan to keep it forever, but again, 30 years driving, always buying cheap, never a problem. With warranties going out longer and longer these days, this is even less of a concern for me. Of course, YMMV !

Re: Reconfirm on the fuel tank capacity

Fuel pump overheating???

As far as I know, the only circumstance that would cause a fuel pump to fail due to overheating would be if you habitually run out of gasoline - i.e., the fuel pump is operating with little or no gasoline (coolant) passing through it.

Refilling your fuel tank at ANY point prior to "empty" will avoid the risk of fuel pump failure due to overheating.
