Alhtough we usually take my wife's minivan with thekids, there have been times when I would have liked to pop in a DVD for the kids in the backseat.
Doesn't seem like it would be any more of a distraction for the driver than say NAV. |

Thus you need to fake out the vehicles CAN bus into thinking that the vehicle is parked. However those who understand how CAN bus works know that you cannot just stop the message from being sent and sending a similar message while the original is being sent doesn't work (I've tried). So my next step is to fake the Park Brake Switch (I have a manual). I'm sure this should work, but I'm not sure if the radio listens to the Vehicle Speed from the CAN bus or the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) that connects to the NAV. If this is the case then too bad... don't work...
Of course then we could just get the Japanese version of the software on the NAV (Japan doesn't have the same rules so I hear)... |

There must be a way to do it in the 08. If I recall, the hack provided for picture and sound, but you couldnt change the program once you were moving. I am sure someone will solve this. |

you put the parking break on and hold two buttons
you see a little flicker then you can disable the parking brake and go |

It is aware of Vehicle Speed, Park Break, something the unit calls "BACK" but this isn't Reverse, and another which escapes me right now.. I'll get back to this post and add it. But it's my guess that these parameters have something to do with video playback. |

DVD played up to about 2mph then the screen went to something else. The parking brake signal needs to be there, but keep in mind that it could either be using the GPS or the speedometer to get the speed input. |

(this is on an STS-V with touch screen Nav). The manager told me they sell a module that can be installed in my model of car (he looked it up) that will bypass the car's lockout of the video and other Nav, bluetooth functions and allow them to operate while the car is in drive and in motion so that I could patch a backup camera to the existing touch screen Nav display as well as watch video and access the other functions of the Nav and bluetooth. I can also have the module installed seperately if I only wish to unlock all those features while in motion without getting the camera. I would suspect if it's not available yet, it will be if they make it for the touch screen Radio/Nav unit used in the STS and Escalade. Like someone else suggested you might check your local aftermarket stores that specialize in Navigation, Stereo, and Video systems and ask.

If you trick the car to think it isn't moving to get full access to play movies and so on, I wonder if it will also affect the safety system to think the car is not moving and that will disable the airbags and other safety stuff …. |

This is already available for the 07+ Escalades and GM trucks with Nav. I had one of these units on my '07 Escalade and it worked great, simply plugged inline on the radio harness. Ordered one for my '08 Chevy diesel too.
Maybe you can call them and ask if they can make one for the CTS? The item is called a "lock pick" http://www.coastaletech.com/ |

CTS unit is different than all other units. No tricks will work.. VSS will override any cheap fix and when that fails all newer units also now check the Nav antenna to check for speeds over 8mph. I am sure a fix will eventually come out but it will take some time. Also have to realize that the Escalade Unit, Tahoe, Yokon and many others use very similiar radios so there is a huge demand and one fix for all of them. CTS unit is unique to the CTS.. Not many users yet that would buy into it so it will take a while.. My guess... Well over a year. |

First off lets recap the issue. Nav system is aware that the park brake or PRNDL are not in PARK!.. so we need to fake it. So how is the nav system aware of the state of Park brake or PRNDL? The answer CAN BUS; specifically the Low Speed or Single Wire CAN bus. This is the infotainment/body network in modern GM vehicles (most). So we have to either (A.) fake out the park brake switch or PRNDL position OR (B.) fake out the CAN bus message.
Solution A.) Advantages: simple and cheap hardware to fake out park brake switch. Disadvantages: Park brake light on IPC will be illuminated while driving. For those with Reverse Park Assist this will be disabled while system think park brake is enabled. Doesn't solve PRNDL position issue. Other unknown side effects.
Solution B.) (the one I used)... Advantages: method works for both Park Brake and PRNDL users. Disadvantages: Will result in Warning Telltales on IPC due to disabling BCM messaging. Cost, tools needed for Single Wire CAN are expensive.
How is solution B accomplished? For those who have access to tools that work with GM's Single Wire CAN here is how you can simulate the Park Brake or PRNDL Message.
Step 1: Create a message to transmit with ARB ID 1005E040 (29bit) Data Bytes 1-5: 00 02 30 00 00 No data in remaining bytes
Step 2: Create a message to transmit with ARB ID 241 (11bit) Data Bytes 1-8: 01 28 00 00 00 00 00 00
Step 3: Create a message to transmit with ARB ID 241 (11bit) Data Bytes 1-8: 01 3E 00 00 00 00 00 00
Step 4: Transmit Message in Step 2
Step 5: Periodic Transmit Message in Step 3 (every 3 seconds)
Step 6: Periodic Transmit Message in Step 1 (every 100 ms)
Step 7: Ignore warning and telltales on IPC
Step 8: ENJOY your new found coolness while KEEPING YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD WHILE DRIVING!
FYI be careful we are disabling the BCM's Normal Messages so there may be some adverse effects!!!!! So use at your own risk!!!!!!
I will work harder on this.. see I can get rid of telltales.
