Front hub and bearings assembly change on 2010 CTS4.

A friend and I changed my drivers side front hub assembly this morning with out to much trouble. The biggest problem we had was after we got all the bolts out we had to keep on finding different angles to beat the old assy off. I took a hammer and a piece of pipe and from under the car (on a lift, thankfully) kept working my way around to try to evenly, little by little get the assy off. After we got it off we took some sandpaper and cleaned up the area of dirt and corrosion and carefully put the new piece back, being careful to line the bolts holes up as closely as possible. Once we had it on we were able to get a bolt started with a couple of minor adjustment taps with a hammer. After we got the 3 bolts in and the big nut back on the spindle the job was all but over. I'm no trained tech but I did used to do a lot of my own work in the 70's and 80's until things got a little to complicated or my life was just to busy to take the time to do it but I would say most anyone with a little mechanical aptitude should be able to do this. I will also say that this is the 1st time I've ever seen a whole hub and bearing assy like this, I have changed a lot of the old fashioned bearings back in the day, but not like this. I will also say that I watched one of the instructional video's on youtube that someone on the forum had suggested and found it very helpful. Sorry I didn't video this one. Just my 2 cents.

They have been using the unit bearing assemblies since the late '80s. They are great for the manufacturing process and for reducing maintenance activities, but suck for the enthusiast. personally, I'd rather grease a bearing now and then instead having to replace an expensive assembly.

A three jaw wheel puller would have made the job much easier.

We had one of those but the axle just kept pushing in and we were afraid of damaging something if we pushed it in to far.

Did your assembly come with the ABS sensor wire? If not, was it simple to swap it from the old one?

We first started using these on the 1980 X cars (Citation, etc) These unitized ball bearing assemblies hate impacts or curb bumps. Even shipping cars by rail proved to be a problem.

Went through this a couple of months ago. I tried like hell and could not get the hub to come off with what little tools I have and sitting on the driveway pavement cursing the rust gods. I ended up taking it to a local shop with my parts and had them do it.
