Question to all who have replaced a failed factory exhaust

This does not seem to be the best quarter for me and my CTS.

My exhaust went the other day and my question to the forum - has this type of failure has happened to anyone else?

The car is 4yrs and 8 months with 112K on the odometer. Visually, the exhaust shows no signs of rust, but one of the pipes leading from the resonator has separated cleanly at what looks like a weld point. If this is a common problem of the welds not holding up, I may not go down the path of replacing it with a factory replacement.

I am attaching a picture of pipes leading from the resonator.

    Any feedback will be appreciated.

    Ron

I believe you are the first on this forum to report such a problem. So it would appear it is an isolated incident.

....and if your welds held for the last 112k miles, I wouldn't worry too much about replacing with factory parts.

I believe that the exhaust is considered part of the "Emissions system". I think that the "system" has a long term warranty regardless of miles. Talk to your local dealer service department.

Thanks for the post, my 3.0 sounds like crap when first started up, then slowly quiets down after it warms up.... I will have to inspect it now.

    Hi guys,

As I read my Federal Emissions Control System Warranty, "Exhaust Pipes and/or Mufflers (when located between catalytic converters and exhaust manifold)" are covered for 2yrs or 24Kmi, whichever comes first. Some other Emission Warranty Parts are covered for up to 8yrs or 80Kmi, whichever comes first.

    California-registered vehicle coverages differ.

I can't see close up detail in the picture you sent, but is the break such that a muffler shop could weld up or just replace that small area of pipe?

That can be rewelded. Just a poor weld to begin with. Shouldn't have broken as it did. They might have to put a piece of metal over that area and weld clean metal-to-metal, or cut out a small area and replace the metal, but it shouldn't take too much. One hour.

Re: Question to all who have replaced a failed factory exhaust

Thanks for the feedback/replies. at 112K I am long past the emissions warranty. I spoke to a couple of repair shops since I posted that are confident that they can do a decent repair on it.

At startup/idle, I've been getting compliments on the current sound. I tell them thanks and that they don't want to be around at 2000 rpm as it can get really loud.

    Happy Holidays

I often think that a pair of Borla Turbo mufflers would be a great addition to my wagon.

I have a Corsa cat-back exhaust on my cts-v. It has a balance of deep aggressive tone when needed and zero cabin drone.
Looks like mangaflow makes an exhaust... I'm sure it sounds great, but I wonder about cabin drone.
I do like the idea of a couple borla mufflers
