2009 door latch replacement service question

2009 CTS went to dealership because left rear door was not operational. It would lock and unlock (you could hear it), but neither inside nor outside handle would operate. When you pulled either it felt like the door was perpetually locked.

Cadillac Tech states that door latch mechanism must be replaced. Approximately $350 installed. Ok, fine ... I can deal with that.

Tech also states that to get to the mechanism he must remove the interior door panel and 95% of the time the panel brakes when it is removed. As a result, it will be another $550 to replace the interior door panel.

I find it hard to believe that the panel cannot be removed without a 95% chance of breaking the panel. I am looking for guidance and experience on this issue.

Your time and assistance is much appreciated.

Re: 2009 door latch replacement service question

    Welcome to the forum!

I haven't heard of a single case on this forum where the door panel was broken by replacing the door lock. I think someone's blowing smoke!

Re: 2009 door latch replacement service question

Thank you for the reply and the welcome Marv - much appreciated.

I spoke with the service manager who also stated that they could not replace the latches if I would not agree ahead of time to replace the door panel if it was broken during repair. I declined the service and have my car back with the non-functioning door.

I looked at the printout the dealership gave me. It states that panel may break because they have to remove the door panel "with the door stuck closed." The service manager did not articulate that the issue was removing the door panel while the door was closed. However, I am still skeptical that it cannot be removed without breaking the panel.

After reviewing past postings on this forum, it seems that few others have dealt with this as well and replacement of the latch has been the fix.

I still find it very hard to believe that they cannot either: 1) remove the door panel when the door is closed without breaking the panel; or 2) somehow get the door open first.

    Frustration continues.

I would try a local body shop. I bet they could get the door open.
