    Aftermarket computer chips

Anyone have any experience with the aftermarket computer chips that are advertised. The sellers advertise that you can choose between better gas mileage OR better performance. They also claim they have no effect on warranty. ??????????????

    Re: Aftermarket computer chips

i believe you're talking about tuning, which involves a computer chip indeed but it's a rather involved (and expensive) process

tuning is more for when you put lots of aftermarket bits on your engine, and you want to alter the engine's programming to take full advantage of those modifications.

I agree with "Moist /cabbage", I think the OP is talking about a $35ish sham that promises improved gas mileage. They don't work and are only good for the person selling them to suckers!

    X+hp for $69.95 ?
    Call me skeptical.

As for warranty, burned out cats have been denied for manifold spacers and boy racer air boxes. Your call. JMO

The right tuner can do wonders with a bone stock engine with no aftermarket parts, I think that is the bulk of the tuner business these days.

Yes I guess a small mileage improvement is not worth the worry of it possibly doing damage.

A "chip" isn't going to improve mileage. All they do is alter the signal from the IAT sensor. Making the PCM/ECU "think" it's colder outside than it actually is. That caused more fuel to be injected... Which is useless if there's no extra air for it to mix with. A rich fuel mixture LOWERS mileage and power output.

I think "chips" are a thing of the "90's". Everything in the last decade is controlled by computers. Can't even think of where you could plug a "chip" in. I do have my C6 "tuned", both engine and transmission which makes it a completely different car. I also have my Avalanche "tuned" and get 3-5 mpg more than before. That has alot to do with the transmission more than the engine.

I noticed I am able to force 6th gear in manual mode around town where the CPU would normally be happy with a lower gear. I would guess a tuner might squeeze 1 or 2 mpg out of the cts if owners wouldn't mind the lack of performance, and if no damage to the drivetrain occurred as a result.

I often find myself trying to make a deep impression of the gas pedal in the carpet, so factory settings around town are fine with me. The only time I would really like a mileage improvement is when the car is on cruise control, on the highway - since that kind of cruising is strictly for sight seeing and books-on-CD.

I consistantly get 20 mpg in town and when on the highway (rarely) 27 mpg so a "tune" for mileage is useless IMO on these cars (not including a V).

    Re: Aftermarket computer chips

Thanks again to all who replied.

Since I have a "disposable car" that I drive in the city, gas mileage is not that big of a deal. I decided to pass on the aftermarket chip. But I am going to install a dash cam. I like gadgets. My disposable car is a 2012 Kia Soul. It will also be my winter car, here in WI.

There's a great discussion over in the performance mods section about the Trifecta Tune for the CTS. Does work more on the transmission and shift points etc, but the feedback is pretty positive. I'd suggest reading through it if you're serious about getting more out of your 3.6DI
