Competitive driving mode disables traction control (TCS) but keeps Stabilatrak on.

Stabilitrak and the TCS is turned off and the steering effort is increased.

Copied right out of the manual.

    Competitive Driving Mode

To select this optional handling mode, press the TCS/StabiliTrak button quickly two times and
STABILITRAK COMPETITIVE MODE displays in the Driver Information Center (DIC). While in the StabiliTrak Competitive Mode,
the StabiliTrak Off light comes on, TCS does not limit wheel spin, and more effort is required to turn the
steering wheel. Adjust your driving accordingly.

Press the TCS/StabiliTrak button again, or turn the ignition to
ACC/ACCESSORY and restart the vehicle, to turn TCS back on and turn the TCS/StabiliTrak warning light off.

    Re: Competitive Driving Mode

The manual does not say "Stabilitrak and the TCS is turned off and the steering effort is increased". It says "the StabiliTrak Off light comes on, TCS does not limit wheel spin, and more effort is required to turn the steering wheel". You engage competitive driving mode by pressing the TCS/Stabilitrak button quickly two times and Stabilitrak Competitive Mode displays in the DIC. Press the TCS/Stabilitak button again or restart the car to turn TCS back on and the TCS/Stabilitrac warning light off.

If you want to turn Stabilitrac off then you press and hold the TCS/Stabilitak button until the TCS/Stabilitrak light comes on and the appropriate DIC message displays. Press the TCS/Stabilitrak button again to turn both systems back on.

    Re: Competitive Driving Mode

It says exactly how Gohawks said in my manual too.

    Competitive Driving Mode
    To select this optional
    handling mode, press the
    TCS/StabiliTrak button quickly
    two times and STABILITRAK
    COMPETITIVE MODE displays in
    the Driver Information Center (DIC).

    While in the StabiliTrak Competitive
    Mode, the TCS/StabiliTrak warning
light comes on, TCS does not limit
wheel spin, and more effort is
required to turn the steering wheel.
    Adjust your driving accordingly.

    Press the TCS/StabiliTrak button
again, or turn the ignition to
    ACC/ACCESSORY and restart the
vehicle, to turn TCS back on and
    turn the TCS/StabiliTrak warning
    light off.
    Notice:
    When traction control is
    turned off, or Competitive Driving
Mode is active, it is possible
to lose traction. If you attempt
to shift with the drive wheels
spinning with a loss of traction, it
is possible to cause damage to
    the transmission. Do not attempt
to shift when the drive wheels do
    not have traction. Damage caused
by misuse of the vehicle is not
    covered. See the warranty book
    for additional informatio

Seriously? I copied that directly out of the manual.

So what is the difference between "steering effort is increased" and "more effort is required to turn the steering wheel"?

Yes you did but unfortunately, Stabilitrak and the TCS is turned off and the steering effort is increased means something different than what the manual says which is "the StabiliTrak Off light comes on, TCS does not limit wheel spin, and more effort is required to turn the steering wheel" I'm not making this stuff up it's right from the manual if you look closer at what you are reading.

There is a different procedure for turning both systems off that I included in my last post. Since Competitive Driving mode first appeared in the C5 Vettes in the late '90s, it's always been this way.

    Re: Competitive Driving Mode

I understand what you are trying to say now Vetteman by saying it is different same thing my b.f. told me months ago that Competitive mode turns t/c off and only reduces the steering assistance with the variable effort which increases the effort for steering.

I guess I didn't frame my original question properly. I know what the manual says but my question is, what is the purpose of Competitive mode? Under what conditions would one choose it? More importantly, under what conditions should one not choose it, e.g. wet, ice, gravel? Is there any disadvantage even under dry conditions?

    Leonard,

I guess we need more info about you and how you drive. Is your wagon AWD or RWD? Do you intend on drag racing or doing autocross? The systems 'turned off' when driving in the competitive mode are designed to protect you from yourself. Drive under the competitive mode at your own risk. It is not intended for normal street use.

    Re: Competitive Driving Mode

Use it when tracking. Like you mentioned, keep it normal when daily driving, wet, ice, etc.

Or you can use when when having a little spirited driving. The first thing you should do, however, is try it out somewhere out of harm's way. Try it in a deserted parking lot or somewhere like that. Don't first try it during rush hour or during a rainstorm.

Deep snow/ice it helps out, (tcs needs to be turned off regardless since its worthless on bad roads) it allows some sliding to take advantage of sliding to straiten the car on corners but won't allow a complete spin. Nice to have these features to reduce the nannies. My 11 ram would just sit in deep snow rather than spin the tires thanks to all the electronic crap.
