    Cadillac CTS 2008 3.6 263HP burns oil

    Hello,

    What should I do?

My Cadillac CTS 2008 (68000 miles) burns oil. I'm using recommended oil Mobile 1 5w30.

I did consumption test. After 2500 miles there is no oil in my car (dipstick shows that oil is on the lowest level).

    I do not have warranty.

    Please help me!

Re: Cadillac CTS 2008 3.6 263HP burns oil

I'm sure you know that lowest point on the dipstick is much different than no oil. You are probably just over a quart low when you get to that point. I bought my 2008 at 16k miles and it burned about 2 quarts between oil changes (about 7000 miles) so you may not be all that far off of the pace - its now settled in at about 1.5 quarts. I do my full oil changes with Mobile 1 and then keep a couple of quarts of Oriley full synthetic around for top-offs. You could switch to Castrol high mileage oil but keep in mind that it is not full synthetic so you may want change the oil a bit more frequently...say every 5k miles.

The CTS V-6 is known to use some oil between changes. Don't panic unless you 1. See white smoke coming out of the tailpipe or 2. You see puddles of oil under the car

Re: Cadillac CTS 2008 3.6 263HP burns oil

^What he said. If the oil is in the cross-hatch at the tip/bottom of the dipstick, it is around 1 quart low. The engine can holds around 6 quarts of oil.

My former 09, same motor as yours, went through 1 quart every 3000 miles or so. GM considers 1 quart per 2000 miles as normal consumption. Overall the 3.6L seems to have a bad habit of eating oil.

JCBCTS, thank you for your response!

So how can I check how much oil my Cadillac burned?

After 2000 miles (not 2500 miles), oil is on the lowest point of dipstick.

After you check it when it's low, fill it until the dipstick reads its full. However much you had to put in is how much it's burned. My guess is you are not as low as you're thinking you are. Probably only a quart to a quart and a half. Don't get too worried about it until you actually know how much you are really burning. Good luck. Keep us posted.

Actually blue smoke is indicative of burning oil. White smoke results from water/coolant entering the combustion chamber who's is usually a result of a blown head gasket.

Re: Cadillac CTS 2008 3.6 263HP burns oil

    Per GM.
All engines require oil to lubricate and protect the load bearing and internal moving parts from wear including cylinder walls, pistons and piston rings. When a piston moves down its cylinder, a thin film of oil is left on the cylinderwall. During the power stroke, part of this oil layer is consumed in the combustion process. As a result, varying rates of oil consumption are accepted as normal in all engines.

    Oil Consumption
The accepted rate of oil consumption for engines used in the vehicles referenced is 0.946 liter (1 qt) in 3200 km (2000 mi).

I put 1 qt of oil and now dipstick is full of oil.

I didn't try to put more oil.

It means that my Cadillac burns 1 qt of oil, right?

Don't [U]ever[U] fill the oil above the top fill line on the dipstick. Putting too much oil in is actually worse than too little, although neither is good.

Re: Cadillac CTS 2008 3.6 263HP burns oil

I checked the oil, there was none on the dipstick, so I put a gallon jug in it, now seeing that the amount of oil in the engine is possibly a qt low (has a front main seal leak but we just got an oil change on it less than a month ago), what should I do now that I possibly over filled it? I thought lines on the dipstick meant quarts.

I over filled mine last oil change, so I pulled the drain plug and let some out. Took about two minutes.

I thought the "No Oil in car because not showing on the stick" guy was messing with us a couple of years ago but the Gallon Jug but still a quart low guy takes the prize! Thanks for resurrecting this thread....some comic relief as we head into the holidays and a reminder - keep an eye on that oil level!
