    Engine oil change

    Hey,

Is it recommended to use Mobil 1 oil for engine or I can use any oil with the same grade "code number"?

The owner's manual will give the oil specs. No you don't have to use Mobil 1.

Nope. I use AMSOIL Synthetic 5W30. Recommend you use a 100% synthetic 5W30 oil of your choice.

I'm well aware of the oil cap, especially a M1 cap. Mine only has ASE 5W 30 printed on it and there is no mention of M1 in the manual. They have dropped the synthetic reccomendation/use and have now stated that "dexos" approved is the requirement. My manual states on page 10-12 "THIS VEHICLE WAS FILLED AT THE FACTORY WITH DEXOS APPROVED ENGINE OIL". This may not be true for the V engine. FWIW.

Most likely they (GM) stopped getting paid by Mobil to advertise Mobil One! Not that it isn't a great product, I use it and will continue to use it in my vehicles.

    Re: Engine oil change

in 2011 GM switched Cadillacs over to DEXOS1 oil

other GM vehicles will be switching over time but all Cadillacs from 2011 and onward take DEXOS spec oil

now don't confuse the brand Dexos with the spec dexos

Mobil1 is a dexos spec oil as are many other full and semi synthetic oils

refer to the dexos website for a list of dexos licensed oils or look on the bottle for the dexos label/icon

Dexos1 (the oil) is a semi syn

    ...

as a side note: the early 2011 vehicles have a 5w30 oil filler cap (or maybe even a mobil1 oil filler cap) because the Dexos oil filler cap was not in production yet
later 2011 vehicles and onward have the Dexos oil filler cap
    (i'm talking Cadillacs here mainly)

Interesting that there are no Amsoil nor Royal Purple products listed on the dexos website. I sincerely doubt that many of the lubricants on that list will perform as well as either of those full-synthetic labels.

I think this Dexos thing is likely more of a licensing money-maker for GM than anything else, though I'm sure it weeds out some real lousy stuff.

Just throwing this out, but maybe Amsoil and RP didn't want to pay for the testing quite yet. As for your licensing comment, I think you're spot on.

Correcto mundo! All auto manufactures have VERY stringent specs for suppliers to follow, but they do support premier vendors (like Mobil One oil). Meet the spec and you are qualified, not advertised by owners manual or fill cap. Pay $$$ and you get in the manual and on the Cap.
