    Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 – first impressions....almost

That must be my “good luck”. I was thinking about replacing tires on my CTS in a month or two after I return from Alaska. No such luck. This morning on my way to work when I was just getting out of my subdivision I noticed something on the road, it was too late to avoid it. I felt a crushing sound and 100 feet later tire pressure monitor went off. Left rear tire – 1psi. There was a large cut on the sidewall. Tire was basically gone. So I used my trusty donut again (best spent $300 dollars ever!) and went straight to Discount Tire. Decided to go with the new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 - $1,250 out of the door, this included road hazard insurance and 45,000 miles warranty.

I drove only 10 miles or so but car seems to handle very well in terms of cornering, steering response etc. On a concrete hwy though I did notice a difference – the joints were almost unnoticeable. But these are new tires with new tread so it is expected.

I will update this tread in a few weeks when I get few more miles as I do know tires need to “broken in” as well.

Sorry about the bad luck, but you obviously knew you were on borrowed time.

Where you going in AK? My wife leaves Monday to taek my daughter and two infants to her new home in Kodiak where her husband was recently stationed for the next three years.

We will be in Achorage, but plan to drive to a few places including Denali and Seward. We love tropics and hot waather, this time we decided to do something different

Yes it was a bad luck but as you said I was going to do it anyway....so far the tires feel good.

    Happy Trails.

Denali is definitely on my list. So is a cruise up the Canadian coast to Anchorage from Spokane. What's in Seward?

I had those on my Acura. They are directional tires. Great in the rain but if I recall they got a little noisy as they got some wear in them. Overall I liked them.

Edit: I had the Pilot Sport A/S 2s.

I agree with gohawks. I had the PS 2s and they got real noisy toward the end of their short life. But boy, were they fun!

    MoFex,
How do you like your Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3? I'm leaning toward these tires as a replacement of my OEM Pilot tires. I read good reviews about the A/S 3 and would certainly appreciate your input!
    Thanks,
    Cheers!

I've had these on my CTS for about 3months and I love them. The PS 2s had to soft a compound and the AZ heat ate them up in less than a year. Same with my second set! The A/S 3 are made with a harder compound, above 300. I can't tell the difference between the two and I'm hoping they last alot longer than a year!!!!

I'll be shopping for new boots soon. I will have the same conditions as you since I am in Florida, so I also hope they hold up. We need more beta testers' opinions here.

I have had them for a few months and appr. 8k miles. I have mix feeling about them. They grip much better in the wet and snow than OEM's. However they have softer sidewalls and it feels around the corners. On some surfaces they are noisy, annoyingly noisy. Looking back I think I should have gone with the OEM's. But it is my opinion.
I learned long time ago that every tire is a compromise. Also everybody has different requirements, expectations. I also learned not to trust Tiire Rack surveys, very unreliable. Most people have no idea what they are talking about.

So if you can live with a bit more noise and better wet traction this tire could be good for you. You will loose characteristics of the car though.

The thing I look at on the Tire Rack surveys are the "technical" characteristics of the tires such as wet grip, dry grip, etc. I completely agree with your statement that "Most people have no idea what they are talking about." Ain't that the truth!
