2008 CTS HID headlight parking light strip is dead

I had the passenger side DRL go out intermittently. I pulled the headlights out and cleaned the contacts inside the housing and it started working again.

At the same time I noticed that the driver side parking light strip, the clear one on the outside edge, is dead. There does not seem to be any way to change the bulb (LED?) on either the clear or the amber parking light, is there? I opened all the access panels on the housing but there's no room to get to those bulbs without splitting the housing or dremeling a new access hole. The problem does not seem to be in any harness contacts, relays or fuses, I checked them all.

The car is 2008 CTS DI with HID headlights.

As you might have guessed, there haven't been many headlight issues with the parking lights. Keep your eye open on eBay for a replacement or maybe one of the members here might have one for sale. Otherwise give one of the dealers on here give you a quote for a new one.

I gathered as much. Maybe I will need to give my Dremel a chance...

Let me know how that works out. I would like to make the outter LED parking lamps brighter. I was thinking of adding a higher wattage LED to the back of the housing.

Re: 2008 CTS HID headlight parking light strip is dead

I found pics here on the site of a guy splitting his headlight open. I think he used oven at 200 degrees for 15 minutes for softening the adhesive between the lense and the housing. I found heat gun worked better for me. Sorry I did not save the thread to link here, but I'm sure Google knows where it is.

So I bought a headlight unit on eBay for spares. It had broken tabs and the lense was not as good as mine so I couldn't use it as such.

    Taped the lense to protect

Used heat gun and a large screwdriver to split the housing open (after removing torx screws from behind).
This is not super difficult, but it's easy to damage the lense. The trick is to pry only on the inside and bottom edges which are not visible, get fingers in between and pull apart.

Here's the LED for the light strip. It could be accessed by Dremeling the lower corner of the housing open.

The electronics for the LED. It appears my problem was a blown LED, the electronics was fine.

    Another angle

The actual LED under the cap

For assembly, I removed all of the old adhesive with a heat gun and a knife. This took the longest.

I used marine silicone for caulking instead of urethane or epoxy since I wanted to make sure I can open it again. And of course I had to open it since I forgot to connect one wire...

    And it works again

If anyone needs any parts from my spare, PM me. It all works. I got all the electronics, lenses, reflectors, and the HID bulbs. The blinker and DRL bulb is gone.

Please don't tell me that if the LED strips go bad, then the whole headlight assembly must be replaced.
