Question 2008 CTS CEL on, code P2601 - HELP!

CEL is lit on our 2008 CTS AWD DI. Code is P2601 coolant pump ctrl range/perf.

The aux water pump was bad (seized up, board burnt). I replaced it and confirmed it is working (heard/felt it running after the car was shut off).

Reset the CEL, it stays off for 3 days, comes back on. Found a bulletin that described the issue with a software update:

    "
    2008 CTS – Check Engine Light, P2601/P2610
Some 2008 CTS and STS models with the 3.6L Direct Injection engine have had the check engine light come on with diagnostic trouble codes p2601 or 2610 stored in the ECM. GM has issued a software upgrade that may eliminate this condition. Your dealer has access to service bulletin #07-06-04-024 which outlines the procedure for upgrading the software in the ECM. In the case of diagnostic trouble code P2601, your dealer should first check the operation of the auxiliary coolant pump, and if no problems are found, the software upgrade can then be implemented."

Had the local dealership run the update/reset the light (out of warranty, but they discounted the labor to about $70).

Three days later the light is back on again.

    any advice?

    thanks in advance!

    Davedog,

Ugh!! Just wondering, did you buy the replacement part from Cadillac? If so, I would take your car back there and have them re-check the system. If you bought it elsewhere, I'd take it back off and return it, buy a replacement from Cadillac and then take the car back for them to re-check it.

Sounds like a pain in the arse! Good Luck, Marv

thanks for the suggestion. the pump was a genuine (new) AC Delco pump (the same one the dealership sells) that I purchased online (amazon).

Re: 2008 CTS CEL on, code P2601 - HELP!

Info for you from the service manual:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2008 Cadillac CTS | CTS VIN D Service Manual

    After Boil Coolant Pump Malfunction

    Diagnostic Instructions
•Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
•Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
•Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provide an overview of each diagnostic category.

    Circuit/System Description
The auxiliary coolant pump and cooling fan system provides a measure of prevention against fuel vaporization due to excessive engine temperatures. The engine control module (ECM) commands the auxiliary or after boil coolant pump ON when the engine coolant temperature exceeds a calibrated value after engine shut down. The ECM applies ground to the coil side of the auxiliary pump relay. This energizes the coil and applies voltage directly to the pump motor through the switch side of the relay. When the auxiliary coolant pump is activated, coolant is drawn from radiator and pumped into the engine through a tee in the engine coolant inlet pipe. As the colder temperature coolant is drawn into the engine warmer coolant is expelled from the engine and back to the radiator. Removing high temperature coolant from the engine after shut down helps prevent vaporization of the fuel that remains in the fuel injectors and fuel rail during a hot soak.

    Diagnostic Aids
•The auxiliary coolant or after boil pump relay may be referred to as “ENG PUMP” or “FUEL COOL” on the underhood electrical center (UBEC) cover label.
•Low coolant level in the radiator may set DTC P2601.

    Reference Information
    Description and Operation
    Cooling System Description and Operation
    Scan Tool Reference
Control Module References for scan tool information

    Circuit/System Verification
    1. Verify that DTC P2600, P2602 or P2603 is not set.
⇒ If any of the DTCs are set, repair the DTC first. Refer to DTC P2600-P2603.
    2. Ignition ON, command the auxiliary coolant pump relay ON and OFF with a scan tool. Verify that the pump turns ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.
⇒ If the auxiliary coolant pump does not activate, refer to After Boil Coolant Pump Inoperative.
⇒ If the auxiliary coolant pump is always ON, refer to After Boil Coolant Pump Always On.
    3. Observe the engine coolant level. The engine coolant level should be within the operating range, refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling.
⇒ If the coolant level is not within the operating range, refer to Loss of Coolant for further diagnosis.
    4. Inspect the cooling system for the following:
◦Blockage or restriction in the auxiliary coolant pump lines and hoses
◦Blockage or restriction in the auxiliary coolant pump passages
    5. If the cooling system tests normal, test or replace the auxiliary coolant pump.

    Repair Instructions
Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
    •Auxiliary Water Pump Replacement
•Auxiliary Water Pump Inlet Hose Replacement
•Auxiliary Water Pump Outlet Hose Replacement

    Diagnostic Repair Verification

Note: After a repair has been made, some DTCs require the ignition to be turned OFF then back ON before the scan tool function will clear the DTC.

    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Install any components or connectors that have been removed or replaced during diagnosis.
    3. Perform any adjustment, programming or setup procedures that are required when a component or module is removed or replaced.
    4. Ignition ON.
    5. Clear the DTCs.
    6. Turn the ignition OFF for 60 seconds.
    7. If the repair was related to a DTC, duplicate the Conditions for Running the DTC and use the Freeze Frame/Failure Records, if applicable, in order to verify the DTC does not set. If the DTC sets or another DTC is present, refer to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle and perform the appropriate diagnostic procedure.
    Or
If the repair was symptom related, duplicate the conditions under which the customer concern occurred to verify the repair. If the customer concern reoccurs or another symptom is present, return to Symptoms - Vehicle and perform the appropriate symptom diagnostic.
