Lighting questions - Brake and Dash Lights - help please

I have two lighting questions that I have been scratching my head. 2011 CTS sedan Luxuy

    1. When you step on brake, the brake lights do not come on - engine not running, key not in ignition. Normal?

    2. When you turn on parking lights or headlights, center stack lights come on but not the gauge lights - key not in ignition. Normal?

    Thanks
    Bob

If you would like to send me your VIN number I will look into this for you and see what I can find out.

Anyone care to check their vehicle out for me and let me know what you see?

    Many thanks Jon.

Does anyone find this set-up as odd? Especially the brake lights. I thought that circuit was hot all the time. Wonder the reason GM engineered it that way?

I'd guess that dead brake lights prevent battery drain immediately before maximum battery power is needed to start the engine.

    CTS Owner's Manual:
"PRESS BRAKE TO START ENGINE (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ONLY)
If the vehicle has the keyless access system, this message displays if you try to start the engine without having the brake pressed."

Thanks, would have thought since LED the amp drain would be null compared to coventional bulbs.

My 08 Corvette is the same way. Thought it strange at first but it is just the way it is. I guess GM figured there is no good reason to have the brake lights come on if the whole car is turned off.
    rspreng and rspreng like this.

Cool that must be the way GM is going. I had an 02 Z06 but they lit up w/o the key. Thanks.
Now I wonder the reasoning behind not lighting the gauge lights.

The no brake lights when car is completely off is nothing new. I had a brand-new 1999 Mercury Cougar that was the same way. It was the first time I'd encountered a car that required you to turn the car to the "on" position (or completely start the car) for the brake lights to work. I took a driving test in that car, and here in California, they check that your lights function before the test. I actually worried that I would run into an issue when they asked to check the brake lights before the tester got in my car for the test. Interestingly, they had me turn the key to "on" before checking any of the lights. So it's nothing too unorthodox.

Just went out to the garage and tried mine and sure enough, no key with me and no brake lights! Mine has keyless access so I have to press the brake pedal to start it and if I have the keyfob with me, they do light up before I start it. As for the IP lights, mine does that too. My Infiniti did that as well. The cluster likely turns off completely when the ignition is off so this is why it doesn't illuminate when the car is off.

Thanks, this is the first new car in awhile, my current daily driver is a 2003 GMC 2500HD and it is old school.

Thank you ctsfan2009 for checking, appreciate it. New car nuisances I guess.
