Re: 2008 CTS Navigation Disc Update

I just ordered the disk this morning. The woman was very nice but completely unhelpful:

-Couldn't tell me what application version I would be getting.
-Couldn't tell me what DB version I would be getting.
-Couldn't give me an ETA for the back-ordered disc.

I tried about 5 different ways to explain to her that it would be really helpful if they could tell the customer what version we are ordering. The way it stands now, you don't really know what you are buying. If it weren't for this forum, I would have no idea if what I was ordering is any different than what I already have. I'm not sure if this is GM's fault or their suppliers fault, but it seems ridiculous. I like my CTS but the Nav system is almost useless.

On another point, the CTS Nav System that I have (App = 1.04.0000; DB = 8.63.12.022807.19) is very difficult to use:

-You must be in park (or going like 2 miles an hour) to use it (unlike a Garmin or other stand-alone unit). I understand the safety concerns, but if it is that big of a deal then why don't after-market units preclude operation while moving?
-It's very tedious to search by name.
    -The system is very slow.
-If you search by POI it will return only 1 page of hits. This definitely seems like a bug.

Has anyone else experienced this frustration, and if so, does the new Application (2.00.0104) resolve any of these issues?

    Thanks,
    Dave

Re: 2008 CTS Navigation Disc Update

    Dave,

I can understand you. The system is slow to respond, it used to fail to recalculate routes. And yes, all OEM NAV are locked when car is moving. You know - LITIGATIONS! I have owned 5 Garmins, still own two of them for rentals and they work absolutely great! However, nothing bits the CTS screen!

I upgraded the software (not the database) and system seems a bit quicker and actually does not hang up during recalculations. So this is real bonus. Otherwise do not expect any other improvements....

That's odd....because mine's not locked. I can input at 100mph if I feel like it. Maybe it's because it's the European version? I used the speech method and the touch screen while driving.

Actually here is not that bad either as the system let's you input your destination while moving using voice command, address book and "last destination". However if you want to browse POI or enter address you are out of luck. I am OK with that.

Re: 2008 CTS Navigation Disc Update

I'm wondering about the posts here that some folks took 3-4 hours to install the update.

On my 2008 CTS purchased this August:

I installed Gracenotes DB update Rev. 981 in 9 minutes
and the Nav update Software Version 1.04 in 12 minutes

    How long for other folks?

the dvd with the software updates and the map database update takes approximately 3 hours to load. software update parts of the disc take only something like 10 or 20 minutes. it's the map data that takes a long time. it did not include gracenotes.

Quick question, where exactly do I go in the Nav system to find out what my version numbers are?

Press CONFIG button on console and select NAV tab. From there you can select database information.

ok, so I guess I got confused by the woman on the phone at navdisc...of the 5 discs available for my car based on my VIN she said I needed:

    GRACENOTES FOR NAV UNIT HDD
    North America 25962366 $19.99
    SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR 2008 CTS
    North America

There was also a jukebox disc for $19.99 and two nav discs at $199.99 each. What do I actually need?

    thanks....

Re: 2008 CTS Navigation Disc Update

to clarify, the dvd I bought in dec 08 for 199 is gm pn 15226455.
called navigation data update disc version 2.00, for usa and canada.
updated data is map db, navigation sw, audio sw.
and it really took 3 hours. I left the engine idling the whole time.
app ver now is 2.00.0104, db ver is 14.73.7.030308.24.
I have not updated gracenotes, nor have I looked into the update update which is apparently free according to another thread.

Re: 2008 CTS Navigation Disc Update

Thanks for showing me where my versions are. It looks like I have the same versions as many people.

    Application Version: 2.00.0001
    Database Version: 14.73.7.030308.24
    OS Win Automotive v5.0

Is it worth my while to order those discs (expensive, specially after just buying this CTS!) or just wait at least a year then order it?

I haven't noticed any issues or problems with my NAV or mapping system.

I assume your radio comes on every time you start your car. The Software Update part fixes that and updates Audio and Nav software only. Takes about 10 minutes and brings your to APP version 2.01.

I haven't tested that yet; but I did try to install the software update without success. It simply read the disc and then kicked it out (something about incompatible). I may try to reburn it on another CD and try it again tonight.

Re: 2008 CTS Navigation Disc Update

Well, finally updated the system in my car after getting the disks a couple months ago (earlier post). Took exactly 2 hours and 45 minutes total time including Gracenotes upgrade. Upgraded from:

    Ver 1.02.0000 DB 8.63.12.022807.19

    System now runs:

    Ver 2.01.0000 DB 14.73.7.030308.24

The free update disk didn't load - said I already had Ver 2.01.0000 after I installed the $199 Nav DB & system disk.

Cleared up several errors in addresses and "unknown map areas". Also notice that my XM radio seems to stay on in the garage now (better reception ?). Also recalculates driving directions quicker when you veer off the guided path during NAV. A Few additional menus, other new features, improvements, etc.

    Later.
