    Easy Radar Detector Installation

Installed my radar detector a couple days ago to the rear view mirror in about 5 minutes. Installation was very easy thanks to a sleathcord (same as invisicord). My radar detector(Beltronics 965) will not work if it is not properly installed.
Step 1: Remove wire harness plug from rear view mirror.
Step 2: Remove plastic covering from the plug
Step 3: Push ground with black wire on the top row, only wire on the top row.
Step 4: Push 12v with solid yellow wire on the bottom row (3rd wire from the left)
Step 5: Push the wire plug back into the rear view mirror, mount radar detector and start engine. Hardest part was taking the plastic cover off the wire harness. Detector powers on when the car starts and powers off immediately when the engine is turned off.

Great write up, I'm surprised nobody had the courtesy to thank you for it before me. I installed my detector in my '02 'Vette the exact same way, in terms of tapping into the mirror harness, with the exception that I made my own cord. It's the best solution as far as I'm concerned.

I just recieved my new detector (Passport 9500i) and was hoping to get some feedback. I see you have had yours installed for a month now any problems? Looks like your installation is the easiest to follow and would like to set mine up the same way. I also see you placed your detector behind all those dots on your windshield does that cause any interference?

^Yeah it's been a little over a month and I've had no problems whatsoever. I did move the detector about an inch to the left and down. Not because it was causing interference but to hit the mute button easier. Surprisingly I've only clocked two motorcycle cops in a month and I always get those speed safety radar signs that tell you have fast you're going. There are a lot of those in my area.

I tapped the same wire but instead of doing it at the plug behind the rear view mirror, I tapped it up in the upper console area where the map lights and homelink are. I did this because the cable I had is stranded and won;t easily push into the back of the connector pins.

You can trace the bundle of wires from behind the mirror up into the console. I cut the electrical tape that holds the bundle of wires together and tapped into the solid yellow for power. I used the homelink ground wire for my ground because it was easier to get to.

Placing a detector on the dot matrix area of the windshield is a bad idea because the suction cups will give away much quicker and you risk the detector falling and breaking.

Also, As for mounting a 9500i in the same position you will have issues with the satellite signal going in and out.

    tomm,
That has always been my opinion too. Being you are in the business, I take your word as gospel. Thanks for the info.

tomm, thanks for the info it just seems if I bring the detector down below the mirror that I might not have a clear shot out the back, I'll have to look into it. Does anyone know off any other installs that don't adhere to the windshield (maybe the rear view instead) it's a pain putting my sunshield up every time.

Cool Re: Easy Radar Detector Installation

Hey Elvis, how did you get the plug off the back of the mirror? I'm afraid I'm going to break mine. There's that clip that's on the driver's side but that doesn't seem to release it.

Just wiggle it out of there. It's hard but it will eventually come out. You could also try using a flat head screw driver to force it out as you push the clip in.

    Elvis,
Thanks for your pics. Went to my mechanic and after viewing your post and pics, he was able to hard wire my detector.
    thanks again.

    BTW,
That plug is hard to get out. I dropped the center overhead console. It pops right down. The whole wire harness shown in the pics in this post are now exposed. Easy to pick out the yellow and black. There are 2 black grounds and either will work. Good luck.

I use this rear view mount in my Jeep for my beltronics sti but works with escorts also. I think valentine sells there own version of this mount. http://www.countryjoycrafts.com/350Z/escortmount.htm Not sure if it will work in the CTS, as I don't have one.

ummm, you might want to check that again.
The dot matrix area is not on the interior surface of the window, it is embedded in the glass. There is absolutely no difference in adhesion between that area and any other on the window.

As far as the satellite signal, huh? this is not where the satellite gets its signal, that is in the fin on the rear of the roof.
