anyone changed out the front plastic license frame?

I couldn't stand looking at the ugly plastic bracket any longer, so I drilled the rivets off. I will make a metal bracket that reuses the original mounting holes in the plastic bumper fascia, and I would like to know if anyone has used the old style plastic nuts that pushed in to square holes in license brackets to mount a fascia bracket?

    No plastic here

How did you drill them out? They just spin.

I sharpened a 5/16 bit before I started. If you hold the drill at an angle and apply pressure carefully so that the drill bit doesn't "walk" and the bit doesn't break, you can chip away at the rivet heads.

There have been members that turned the factory mount upside down, lowering the plate a little. There is also a motorized frame (also a manual operated version) called 'Show and Go'. Look at eBay Item number: 171018180602 for the motorized one, selling for $115 shipped. The legal idea is to show the plate while driving and not show it when parked. Or, you could do the opposite and take your chances.

    Good Luck, Marv

I am so glad we don't need front plates in MI! That takes sooo much away from the grill. I think the CTS grill looks sweet.

Thanks for the replies. I just wanted to get rid of the fat plastic frame, so I made an aluminum bracket that is behind the plate. I was looking at the push-in square hole insets at an auto store, when a guy who works in the local Cadillac dealer's body shop told me they use 5/16 sheet metal bolts. I used those to mount the bracket.

    No plastic here
Go to bumperplugs.com and select GM. All colors are available. Must drill out rivets and enlarge holes to one quarter inch. See post on 2nd generation CTS discussion forum. If you don't need front license plate these do well.

You might want to do a search; this has been covered quite a few times, with several different solutions.

Re: anyone changed out the front plastic license frame?

I had the outside part of my factory plastic license plate bracket "chromed" (special process) and installed the [upside-down] bracket assembly lower down, where I feel it belongs. I applied the assembly to the front using a couple of nylon cable ties, in through and out of the lower grill openings. The installation is tight - the bracket assembly doesn't move. I'm happy with the cohesive look of the chromed bracket - it matches the look of the other chrome trim pieces on the car.
My '11 CTS came from Pennsylvania, where there's no front plate - therefore a factory LP bracket was never installed by the dealer, and thankfully no holes in the fascia to deal with. On my previous 2nd gen CTS I bought a couple of color-match plugs from bumperplugs.com to fill the holes in the fascia, and they worked out well (they're pricey, but by far the best solution).

That looks great! Why did they put cheap black plastic on at the factory?

My black bracket is not like yours. The top two holes that mount it are an inch higher than your bracket is now. That's why I opted to delete the bracket, and about center the plate on the "bumper" area, so it would be less obtrusive and still cover the holes.

It took some drilling and modification to the holder, and a few dabs of silicon caulking, but thankfully I didn't have to touch the bumper at all. It looks so much better than GMs awful placement, and will do until I patch the holes and toss some 3m vinyl on it.
