some questions for the guys who have done headers

i finally got around to installing kooks 1 3/4 headers on my 06. wasnt too bad but did run into a few small problems. i used ARP studs. drivers side went right in but i couldnt get the pass. side in w/o taking off the 4 center studs and replacing them with the bolts provided. no big deal but not too happy about spending $100 and couldnt use all 12 studs. also the front o2's were a PITA since the extentions supplied wouldnt work. my only problem now is the wires touching one of the primarys on the drivers side. the headers are jet-hot coated and the wires have that reflective tape on them but im not sure if this is going to be enough? any ideas on this besides header wrap? i have to drive 3.5 hours to get it tuned next week and i dont want to burn any wires.

What was up with the extensions? Also, I did't use my extensions because they were just too long and I dont have any issues with them touching the headers. Any way you can re-route them to get them off the headers?

the extention connections dont match up. i had to pull the black piece off the back of the heads to get more slack otherwise they wouldnt reach. i should clarify my post....its not the o2 wires touching the headers. im not even sure which wires they are. ill get a better look in the morning but they appear important since they came wrapped up from the factory.

    They appear important?

I'd suggest sleeping on it, then take another look in daylight. I'm sure you'll be able to find somewhere to tie them up to and out of the way.

Get that tune, then poast back up here and tell us how they sound.

i did arp studs when i did my 1 7/8 kooks... only had to pull the pass rear one.. but then put it back in once the header was hung... mine arent coated and i only have thermo sleeves on my wires... 25k miles on em and no problems!

Re: some questions for the guys who have done headers

i got a better look at the wire that was touching the header and it turned out to be the alt. wire. i remember reading about someone putting a hole in the tube when it burned through the insulation so i moved the wire around and zip tied it. theres about a 1/2 inch gap which i hope is enough. i was going to purchase some plug wire thermo sleeves but it seems they wont fit around LS2 wires. any LS2 guys encounter this problem? im hearing some strange noises but ill wait till after the tune to judge. people sure dont know what to think about this Cadillac though.

Those grey connectors are for the rear two o2 sensors...The front two just need to to have a couple plastic clips pulled out to reach...I was missin the rear two extentions and man what a pain in the butt...

Dont worry too much about the tune, you are just merely runnin a little rich. Ur mpg will be off a little till you get a proper tune...

^^^ MAybe its just me but if i spend 1000 plus dollars on headers and spend 4 hrs installing them, im gonna want a tune to maximize the gains and have the car run perfect. Thats just me though.

Re: some questions for the guys who have done headers

I recently installed the same Kooks 1 3/4" set and ran into the same problems with the O2 extensions and the wires.
The O2 extensions are simple. Just lake a sharp flat screwdriver type thing and remove the one ridge that prevents the connector from seating. Take a look at the factory connector that it goes in place of and see how it needs to be removed.
As for the wires, I took a 8" long piece of 1/2" wide sheetmetal and notched it to fit behind one of the bolts holding on the oil filter housing. The sheetmetal is stiff enough to keep it pushed away from the primary far enough away.

As far as the tune...does anyone have experience with Wiggins Racing and Performance in NC?

Re: some questions for the guys who have done headers

If you are talking about the spark plug wire touching the headers, wrap the headers or get cool sox. I wrapped my B&B headers (looove em), and my back driver's side wire is laying on the header and I haven't had any problems (knocking on wood)

I didn't need extensions on my O2 sensors, they were long enough. I also used stock manifold bolts and gm gaskets on my headers, and they work excellent!

Question: if the headers are coated, why is there tape on em?

When you guys say GM gaskets, do you mean stock exhaust manifold gaskets or does GM make header gaskets?
