I am in the process of choosing a cam, and wanted to get feedback on the one below. This will be in an 04 V (LS6), with only mods being intake and exhaust (stock cats, stock exhaust manifolds). I know I am leaving some power on the table by retaining my factoring manifolds, but I really don't want something too loud. Opinions/suggestions are appreciated....
VRX3 Cam 226/228 .585/.588 114 LSA. Our most popular Street Camshaft. 1700-6700 Power Band.
Youll have to forgive me, do you mean rough or quick paced? the lower the Lobe Sep (LSA) the rougher the idle. You can circumvent this by turning your idle speed up, but personally I like shaking around like Charley Murphy.
Longtubes may only net you 20 RWHP. But don't just talk about peak numbers. Longtube headers pick up torque all across the power curve. This gives you more average power which makes the car pull better through the entire power curve. This should be anyones first mods. CAI, longtubes and a better flowing catback should be done before a camshaft change. Just take a look at the torque improvement at only 3000 rpm on dyno pulls with the addition of headers.
Well I am doing the cam install this weekend. We are going to try to do everything this weekend so I can get tuned on Tuesday. Cam, Springs, Pushrods, Timing Chain, Plugs, Fuel Filter, and hopefully high flow cats will be here in time. It's going to be a long weekend, but should be fun tearing into the V for the first time. I'll post up dyno results when it's all done.
My cam has a 114+3 LSA. I can tune the RFA numbers so it idles nice and smooth at about 825 rpm or so it lopes like a cammed 68 camaro at 750 rpm, which by the way, is how I normally have it setup unless it goes to the dealer. I get stopped every day and asked 'What the hell do you have in that thing?'
The tuner didn't think there will be much of a noticeable lope at idle, but that would be nice if there was. I just hope the setup makes decent power and has good street manners. I'd be happy with 380 or so at the tires.
Well, it looks like the high flow cats won't be here in time for my tune. In your guys opinion should I wait to tune the car until I can get these installed, or will it not make enough of a difference to worry about it?
My thoughts as well....I guess I can get a base tune and take it back to him after my cats arrive. THis would be a non issue, but I'm on a tight time schedule because I am doing the cam swap this weekend, tuning it Wednesday, and heading to Vegas with the car Thursday.
You actually should be able to drive that car (it will be a little finicky) with that cam. My car untuned was still able to be driven, but man it was fun trying to get that lightened flywheel to keep enough inertia on downrev to idle..
I think I will need a re-tune for the 02 sensors regardless, after the high flow cats are in place....I guess I will get a bse tune and then re-tune after the cats are in, hopefully the tuner will cut me a break.
