Billy Boat Exhaust Stock Dyno Run & DB Levels

    Monday, August 2, 2004

As promised, Billy Boat Exhaust began our CTS V-Series exhaust project this morning with some decible level recordings and a few dyno pulls.

We record the stock DB levels as a reference for the performance system. We record 12 different areas (interior and exterior, static and driving). The highest level we found was 94 DB at WOT 20 feet behind the car while making a dyno pull, while inside the car cruising at 70 MPH we saw 73 DB.

On our Dyno-Jet chassis dyno the car made 300HP at 6100 RPM and 297 foot pounds of torque at 4400 RPM.

We proceeded to remove the factory system and make a plan for the new, 3" performance system. Our engineering dept. is drawing up the new center resonator and rear muffler configurations per my instructions (we design each muffler specific to each application), while Eric Johnson, my prototpe specialist, is knee deep is 3" tubing fitting the system into the car.

The inlet to the factory resonator is only 2 1/4", which could be a limiting factor for the stock system. The challenge in increasing the tubing size is to keep the exhaust tone very low with no resonation.

I will post photos of the exhaust in progress as well as some different tip styles tomorrow (my graphic/web guy is sick today). I am building a 4 1/4" round double wall tip, which is what I think will look best.

Thanks to those who have already ordered, and I will keep you posted.

Billy, how many miles on the V that you dyno'd? That is about the worst numbers I've seen one put down.

Thanks for the update on the exhaust. Looking forward to the movies/sound-clips!

WHAT! How many runs on the Dyno? Seems like your getting one of the lowest #'s I've seen stock for any Dyno pull. What were the conditions? Do you use a big fan?

Everything I've ever seen published is usually in the range of 327 RWHP +/- 5.

    I think he's talking about a 3.6 CTS.

Excellent starting numbers to use before the exhaust mod.

    Billy,

Thanks for supporting the CTS-V community. I'm sure I'm not the only person who appreciates your interactive involvement while bringing this product to market in a TIMELY manner. As soon as I see pictures and get numbers, you'll have my order.

I also thought the numbers were a bit low. I would be interested if anyone else has similar numbers on the same kind of wheel dyno.

I learned a long time ago you don't race dynos. Different cars will produce different numbers at different times in different parts of the country. And remember, we are in Phoenix (108 today) in the summer, and the air is not the best to make power.

We reinstall the stock system right after we finish a project to verify the numbers. That way you have a back-to- back runs within an hour of each other.

And besides, the first thing someone is going to do is bolt one on and take it to their local dyno. I want to be sure it works as much as you do (this is my car, you know).

    Your car? What color? FG2?

108* explains the dyno reading. We need the A/C hooked up to the intake to cool it down.

You're beautiful! You got my order last week and if the CTS-V system is anywhere near as nice as the BB system on my C-5...we'll love it. Will be matching up your system with tpis headers and metal mesh cats (3" in - 2 1/2" out, but will be 3" out when they go on to mate up with your 3" tubing - even if it takes some creativity). The rear fascia outlet opening sure appears to be "oval"...sure you wouldn't consider 4 1/2" or 5" double wall oval tips...cocked somewhat to match up with the fascia opening? Resonator? When talking with your folks when I placed my order the word was "crossover...
