Surprising Weight Savings from Aftermarket Wheels

Remove this ad
Hey everybody,

I have been meaning to post up this thread for awhile now and just never got around to it. Here is the deal. I recently had my aftermarket wheels off my car and I was running my stock wheel/tire combo for a bit and I decided to weigh both the aftermarket setup and the stock setup to see what the weight difference was. What I found was pretty surprising. (Keep in mind that my home scale is not calibrated to be exact, but the difference in weight is what really matters)

The stock 18"x8.5" (Speeline?) wheel with stock 245/45zr18 Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar EMT tires = 28.5 lbs (wheel) + 31 lbs (tire) = 59.5 lbs

CCW Forged Aluminum 19"x9" front wheel with 235/35zr19 Toyo R888 tires = 24.1 lbs (wheel) + 25 lbs (tire) = 49.1 lbs ---> weight savings of 10.4 lbs/wheel

CCW Forged Aluminum 19"x10" rear wheel with 295/30zr19 Toyo R888 tires = 25.5 lbs (wheel) + 29 lbs (tire) = 54.5 lbs ---> weight savings of 5.0 lbs/wheel

Wow. So in the process of making the car look a lot better, I inadvertently cut a grand total of 20.8 lbs (both fronts) + 10.0 lbs (both rears) = 30.8 lbs of unsprung weight.

Now I just need to figure out how much the stock cat-back weighs vs. the Magnaflow cat-back. I have heard (and it definitely felt much lighter) that it is almost 20-30 lbs lighter.

Same thing for the stock exhaust manifolds vs. the Kooks 1 3/4" headers. Does anybody know the weights of any of these parts?

Yep. The stock wheels and runflats weigh a lot. Even the accessory wheels shave a few pounds off (I think they're about 2-3 pounds lighter) and it does make the car feel a little more nimble.

Problem is I like the look of the stockers and CCWs don't come cheap if all you're after is some weight savings.

Tweeter,

What has been your experience with the toyo's? running them on the road or at the track?

Re: Surprising Weight Savings from Aftermarket Wheels

The stock cat-back exhaust is around 60# or so. I had a sheet with weights written down around here somewhere, because I was possibly going to ship mine to someone a while back, but I think I must have thrown out the sheet. It's in the 55-65# ballpark.

As for wheels and tires, not only are the Accessory wheels ~3# lighter, but you can also see good weight savings by ditching the run-flats. The fact that the 19" R-compounds are lighter than the smaller 18" run-flats is a good demonstration of just how heavy run-flats are as a result of their construction.
