I was pretty sure it was the belt, so I limped the short distance to home, opened the hood, and found that a portion of the belt had separated and had become wrapped around the alternator pulley and was lodged under the remaining part of the belt!
Heavymetals said to always carry an extra with you, and he was right (as usual). Put on my spare and went and bought another one. Funny thing is, I had been doing NO spirited driving ... it just happened out of the blue with no prior warning. Just glad I had one in the trunk and that I wasn't in BFE somewhere.

Do you carry a wrench/socket to get that belt tensioner down? Damn maggie, must be that time of the month....jk not sure she even had anything to do with it. My hood liner still has multiple belt scars from my maggie days |

I went for a drive after I put on my spare, maybe 15 miles. I carry an open-end wrench, but should rethink that ... a socket/ratchet setup is much easier.
That time of the month? Yeah, I might have to whip 'er a bit today going to the Dream Cruise. |

I carry a long SEARS box end to give enough leverage on the tensioner for replacement.
An extra belt and a wrench are a "must have" IMHO.

You might want to check yours too. This causes side loading on all the bearings and the belt. I had to replace my tensioner and get a new belt and bolt. |

Don't know why some people have their belt riding up. I don't even have the bracket on, and have no problems.
BTW I have a 15mm socket on my breaker bar
