How many V-owners have NOT had problems with their rear differential?

Remove this ad
I have seen the various threads talking about how the rear differential on the V is a POS and several post by people who have gone though 3, 4, 5, and even 6 differentials! From the previous posts, it would seem that every rear differential is simply waiting to self destruct. However, there has not been a recall so I doubt that every rear differential has blown apart. I was wondering how many of you have not had problems with the rear differential in your car? I have over 42k miles on my '04-V with even a few track days thrown in for fun and I have never had any problem with the rear differential. Am I the only one or are there other V owners out there without problems? Am I just one of the lucky few or is it only a matter of time?

Robert

Re: How many V-owners have NOT had problems with their rear differential?

I had the first one replaced on my '04 because it was whining and was still under warranty, however, it never broke on me. With the new one installed, I started hearing whine again after about 5,000 miles of my typical spirited driving. Since then I upgraded to a modded 408 that puts about 450 to the ground (conservatively). Somehow, some way, that thing has not exploded on me.

I think it is important to note that I almost never tromp on it in first gear...there's no point, it would just smoke the tires off. It spins pretty bad in second gear but I never rev up and launch like a drag racer. This isn't a drag car so I don't treat it like one.

Hmmm... I wonder if she'll hold up to the new 455?

Re: How many V-owners have NOT had problems with their rear differential?

04, 51K miles, still on my original diff. No smoky burnouts in 1st. I learned to stay away from that from this forum. From the polls Reed has done in the past, I originally thought there were a lot of rears breaking but that's not the case. (The rear diff still is a POS).

Re: How many V-owners have NOT had problems with their rear differential?

'06 w/30k miles on original diff with no whine.

I did have to replace a pinion seal for leaking and the friction modifier additive. I would call that "little to no problems".

Re: How many V-owners have NOT had problems with their rear differential?

Pretty sure I'm on the first diff. Only had the car a few months. Its an 05 with 23K, and I do beat on it when I want to have fun.
I think most of the diffs were changed because of the whine.
Some of the members were talking about the cradle getting tweaked. Not enought to really notice, but enough to give you problems in the long run. Maybe that's why some guys replace them a few times.
It doesn't hurt to change the diff fluid from time to time.

Re: How many V-owners have NOT had problems with their rear differential?

I've had my and WW's share of Maggied track days, all on original diff. No dumping clutch, no smokey burnouts, lots of full throttle time though..

Changed rear oil with RP every engine oil change, ...................because it's only 2 qt's.

Almost 37K on the original. It gets hard acceleration after roll-out. Still on the original diff lube too
