| | Cadillac Owners Enthusiast | | | | | Just installed Volant intake, cannot believe the huge power gains I got! I was amazed! Never thought an intake could do so much! My only speed mod before this was a tune. After putting the Volant on, the tires break loose at WOT all the way through 1st, 2nd and the first half of third gear. The power surge is amazing at 3000rpms when that engine starts getting louder it just throws you back in your seats like a quick spooling turbo! I was just going to do only a filter replacement, but when I was able to pick up this Volant used (only 1.5 months) for $100 dollars, I said screw it. Best investment ever! |

I have one in practically new condition if anyone is interested. I removed it when I had my Maggie installed. For what it's worth, it is the nicest, fit and finish, CAI for the V. You should never expect a great deal of gain from a CAI alone. |

The intake ducting for new cars is made of plastic - relatively cheap when compared to stainless in an exhaust system.
To get more hp by opening up the intake can be equated to better efficiency of operation by using less power to suck air into the engine. Or for the same energy, you can get more air (plus fuel) and generate more power.
Now I can understand the cost benefit analysis of not making the exhaust system less restrictive and more efficient.
But why would any auto manufacturer limit the size of the inlet ducting and not take advantage of almost free mileage gains? I have doubts that some aftermarket vendor can economically take advantage of any increase in hp or efficiency by opening up the air box and ducting above what GM or others would do if they could.
Man - I'm not sure if I understand what I said but I know what I meant
Can someone tell me why GM left 30 hp (at the wheels since that's what SOTP feels) or 7.5% efficiency of low hanging fruit out there? |

We're talking about primarily WOT conditions here, while GM is designing for part throttle also, but you're mostly right (though many times manufacturers make some compromises, I'm sure). Personally there's no way I'd believe in a 30 hp increase without dyno numbers before and after install ... and not a butt dyno, either.
BTW, butt dynos aren't all they're cracked up to be. | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
