Oil Catch Can

Remove this ad
I am wondering what exactly an oil catch can does and whether or not my V would benifit from it.

I have a 2005 CTS-V with a K&N CAI and a Magnaflow cat-back. I put the Magnaflow on less then 500 miles ago and I am already starting to notice some black soot in the exhaust tips. I never see black smoke, and it doesnt seem to be burning oil (a noticeable amount at least). Does anyone have any Idea why this is happening, and if an oil catch can is the best solution, will it be a hard thing to explain to the dealer for warranty work?

Re: Oil Catch Can

It catches oil mist and prevents it from being reburned. In the case of a maggie, keeps the rotors clean.

I have an AMW that I'm not using.

Fantastic quality with an LS6 bracket.

Re: Oil Catch Can

Black on the tips mean you are running rich. Get a tune, and you won't have that issue.

As for the catch can. Dunno on that one. I was initially going to buy one, as I was burning about 1 qt every 1500 miles. Initially dealer said it was normal. After the next service visit though, they noticed I had a small leak in the oilpan gasket.

If you feel you are burning a 'lot' of oil, check for leaks first, then go to the can.

Re: Oil Catch Can

If you plan on keeping your V or you are meticulous about your vehicles (like me), then get the catch can. I like the idea of recycling a few ounces of oil every 3-5,000 miles vs. re-ingesting it into my manifold and burning it off. All the oil that I emptied out of the catch can was running back through my intake as oil mist. Maybe that doesn't bother anyone else, but it always bugged the shit out of me. Plus, the anodized cans look cool as shit under the hood.

You are running rich after adding the K & N. You need a tune.

I'm sure anyone who has ever tried to clean the gunk out of an intake manifold is happy to install a catch can. I'm not sure why the LS6 seems to puke so much from the PVC system, but this was the first mod I did. These come stock on the M5, and they actually recycle the oil right back to the pan.
