Cutting your own Corvette FRCs: What a pain!

Remove this ad
Ugh. I ordered some C5 FRCs off Ebay, and am cutting them using StealthV's excellent instructions, but what a pain in the balls. I wish Stealth still offered these pre-cut to fit our cars, but now I see why he doesn't.

I'm from the "take off a little at a time" school of thought, as you can always take off more, so my night went like this:

Cut a little.

Test fit.

Nope.

Cut a little.

Test fit.

Nope.

*repeat ad infinitum*

They do look cooler in person than in pictures though, and even though I'm going to eliminate the "Corvette" lettering, I'm digging the Black + Red. Maybe black with "Cadillac" in a Corvette style font?

This thread serves no real purpose other than as a warning to those who plan on modding the covers to fit. You have been warned.

Use the Dremel tool and the rasp attachment - it cuts the plastic like butter and it's easy to shape. Yup, you gotta go back and forth to shape it just as needed, but it should be easy

Is the 'corvette writing beveled in? or just a sticker?

Its embossed in the FRC. You would need to fill it in with something to make it flush.

get some epoxy body filler ... regular bond-o won't adhere

goop the shit on...then block it smooth, seal, primer, and paint...

Exactly my line of thinking. I refuse to pay $350 for something I can do myself and have the satisfaction of making it one of a kind.

Re: Cutting your own Corvette FRCs: What a pain!

Tony: you got to stop copying everything I do! LOL
Seriously though, cutting them was easy as sh*t! I used a jig saw with metal cutting blade and it was cake. Another thing, I have a total of $60 invested in mine and yeah I saw some of those other covers for upwards of $300 and I only shake my head! Even the carbon fiber ones, if you gave them to me, I would sell them! The corvette ones, in my opinion, do their job of telling everyday Joe's that it is a corvette engine! Also, you should have told me you were buying those as I had another person with em for the same $60 I paid. Some corvette couple has a mini junk yard for vettes in Miami and gets them used all the time.

Re: Cutting your own Corvette FRCs: What a pain!

If you own an '04 or '05, you have a Corvette engine. If you have an '06 or newer, you have a Chevy engine. HAHAHA

I don't care if it is a "Corvette" engine, I own a Cadillac. And if you spent 30, 40 or 50+ grand on a Caddy, what's $300 for a great looking engine? And you know what? I can work and make up the $240 you guys saved in the time it takes you to rig your own.

So slap that, Sally!

Re: Cutting your own Corvette FRCs: What a pain!

I'm with you on the "not being a Corvette" deal, Jim- I'm covering up the 'vette logos.

As far as spending the money, well..... Part of the reason I have plenty of it is that I don't waste it when not necessary.

Re: Cutting your own Corvette FRCs: What a pain!

To me, this is totally worth it....

And when I get the BMR brace in there, it'll look even better. Don't mind this shot. I've since cleaned the engine bay.

Re: Cutting your own Corvette FRCs: What a pain!

At one point I had rigged the lasercutter with a jig to cut the clearance on the covers...but not sure where that little bastard (or the time, files, etc) went...

Might need more track money soon...I'll consider it.
