Exhaust Gurus: Help me with a question?

Remove this ad
There may be a really simple, boneheaded answer to this, but here goes:

I welded my Corsa catback to eliminate the band clamps. It's now just like the stock system (one long piece)- same length as stock obviously, since it's connected to the stock headers and cats.

I'm looking at Kooks headers, and they sell a catted connection pipe specifically for Corsa exhausts that bolts into the Corsa resonators, replacing the front pipe that came with the Corsa. This will be difficult for me, since I can't take the pipes in front of my resonators off now that they're welded.

Here's the question: Why is everyone telling me I HAVE to get the Corsa connection pipes? It would seem to me that since my Corsa bolts up fine to the stock cats, I should be able to use Kooks' kit that's designed to hook up to the stock catback. Why the need for a catted pipe that replaces the resonator to header pipe?

There has to be a reason, yet I'm having a hard time understanding why the Kooks cats that will hook up to the stock catback will not work with my Corsa connection pipes, since they are in the exact same place as the stock ones would be.

Your right, It should work fine......but it probably won't ....Just kidding
It makes sense that it should work but why not be safe and call George @ Kooks and ask.

Re: Exhaust Gurus: Help me with a question?

I don't know man, I had a huge problem mating Edelbrock headers to a stock cat and Flowmaster cat-back on my 88 Camaro, I'd just go with the whole kit to make things simple and clean looking.

Re: Exhaust Gurus: Help me with a question?

The connectors angles are different to the cat-back, I have Kooks/Corsa combo. Getting Kooks without the correct connectors might not fit exactly correct (or at least thats what they told me). Any good muffler shop could probably make the standard connectors work though, just have to play around with fitment.

I would say that you are pretty much set up with whatever you need at work Tony so I wouldn't worry about it! I have heard of some not so great stories with many home installed header applications. In your case, I would just figure to adjust, cut, weld, fabricate whatever needs to be done.

Re: Exhaust Gurus: Help me with a question?

I had the exact same thing with my setup. Got my Corsa Welded up (pre and post resonator, because the exhaust leaks were making me insane. Then of course about 1 month later, I decide to take the plunge, and get the Kooks LT's.

Like the other poster indicated, I'm sure you could have your current lead pipes modified to fit up to the Kooks, they don't "APPEAR" to be more than a few inches from the stock mounting points.

I guess you are not planning on getting cats?

I ended up getting cats, and had those wleded up to my Corsa Resonator, so the only joins in my system, are between the headers and the cats.

Good luck, and you'll love the Kooks.

-Chris

Yeah, I know. I'd rather do it myself after work one night on a lift, as opposed to having my techs cut and weld.

I've been told the whole "different angle" thing as well, but my feeble brain still can't understand it.

IF:

-Stock headers bolt up to stock exhaust
-Stock headers bolt up to Corsa
and
-Kooks headers w/cats bolt up to stock exhaust

THEN:

-Kooks headers w/cats should bolt up to a Corsa

If the angle was different, my Corsa wouldn't have bolted up to my stock cat.

Kooks headers + Cats will absotievely NOT bolt up to a stock exhaust. The LT's themselves are very close to the location of the stock manifolds + stock cats. The long tube's are ...errr...well....Long

Yet they offer a catted connection pipe that they claim will bolt-on to a stock exhuast.

My brain hurts.

The Corsa connection pipe they offer, replaces the standard Corsa Lead pipes, and connects directly to the resonator.

Yeah, I'd like to avoid those if possible. My Corsa lead pipes are welded to the resonators, and that would require cutting and welding. I'd love for the bolt-on factory pipes to work if possible.

Does anyone here have a Kooks and stock exhaust they could snap a picture of?
