Re: New Coil Over Kit Released Today!!!!!

Wow... i'm impressed... ingenious design.

The entire shock body is threaded... the threads are not only for the spring height adjustment... but to vary the length of the whole shock! So no matter how much you lower the car... the shock length can be adjusted so the shock always stays in it's 'sweet spot' compression range. So the shock valving doesn't get screwed up because you're constantly running the shock fully compressed in it's last 1" of travel.

Shock on left is front shock... threads used for spring perch adjustment and shock length adjustment.
Shock on right is rear shock... threads are used only for shock length adjustment. The spring sits in the stock location.

oooooh... adjustable shocks

I'll install the kit this weekend

Re: New Coil Over Kit Released Today!!!!!

Dreamin et al,

I was under the impression from the title of this thread, that this was a 'true' coilover application. I guess if I had actually looked at the picture for longer than .002 seconds, I would have noticed that this is not the case for the rear.

This brings up a few questions:

1) How much does not using a full coilover in the rear affect the perfromance? I know the Penske setup was supposed to be that way, and I know the mallet rear is a full coilover (I've seen that setup in person). If one is only giving up say 25%, but is saving 200% cost-wise (or more), this may be a compromise many of us would be more than willing to make.

2) How much 'extra performance' and/or 'tunability' will the adjustable shocks & dual adjustable spring perches (like Dreamin described in his post), provide vs. say Ground Control + FG2's? I already have FG2's, and was planning on going ground control as my next mod. If the gain between the two setups isn't that much, it may be smart to just save the $400 bucks in my case (??)

I plan on doing a couple roadcourse HPDE's each year ( 2 -4 probabaly). I also am not averse to having the car drive 'stiffly sprung'. My main concern is to be able to lower the car about 1", and have it handle/perform better, while remaining as neutral as posible (I loved the bone stock neutrality of the car). I guess bonus points for something that could be set to be even stiffer and/or lower while actually at the track.

A few odd's and ends:
- My car is a DD.
- I run a stagered tire setup 275/35 245/40 (so I can run a bit lower than stock)
- I have Hot's bars (I also picked up Florian's set of C5 Z06 endlinks, that I will install once the car is lowered).

Any advice anyone can give would be much appreciated (especailly Dreamin, RGD and Feff.)

-Chris

Re: New Coil Over Kit Released Today!!!!!

1) Personally, i would not run a 'true' coil-over in the rear. Moving the springs ontop of the shocks puts the entire weight of the rear on the shock towers. We dont know if GM designed the towers to handle the weight of the car... there could be long term fatigue issues... and in an accident if that piece fails, the springs are pointed right at the rear passenger's spine. With that said, I trust Mallett... he has connections into GM and if he is running a true coil-over, it make me feel a little better.
But I dont see any performance disadvantage to leaving the spring in their stock location... the suspension geometry is as GM designed it; the weight of the car is as GM designed it; the performance increase comes from just lowering the car.

2) Being able to adjust the shock length is huge (in my opinion)... running shocks overly compressed (do to lowering the car) shortens the life of the shock, and completely screws up the shock valving. This kit solves that problem.
With that said, lowering 1" +/- the stock shocks are fine (proven by how many people are running/tracking the GC kit with stock shocks)... Going any lower is going to be a problem for the stock shocks.
As far as 'tunability' of the shocks over the FE4 and FG2... i can tell you after I install the kit. I will set the new shocks at 'full hard' to see how stiff they are over the stock shocks... Keep in mind insanely stiff shocks will only improve performance on a track... a smooth track... on the street you upset the car's suspenion and hurt performance.
FWIW, if I had spent the money for the FG2 and the GC kit... I would not be changing to this kit.

Neutral handling has to be tested... I think this kit will understeer... I may endup running my GC springs with this kit... i am *very* happy with those springs rates.
And normally you dont change ride height for track events (it screws up your alignment)... but being able to crank up the shocks for track use helps a lot.

Odds and ends)
Running the springs rates we're talking about 500-600lbs range, the car will still be a DD
With 35 and 40s... you could lower more than 1"

Dreamin, I forgot, what spring rates are you running right now with your GC set up? Thanks, Mike
