looking at your pix, it seems to me the radio still has to be removed to plug in those connectors into the back of the radio (see "XM receiver to iPod module cable" pix.) And the iPod module itself will have to be placed somewhere in the radio cavity. So splicing into the wire at the XM module seems to be the only difference in terms of install setup from what I can gather. |
You're welcome. You absolutely do not have to remove the radio to install this. I just finished the install, and it's quite a nice kit. The only thing you have to remove is the rear package shelf, plus whatever you want to route the iPod connection cable under (carpet for up the center, kick panels for near the doors).
The iPod interface box sits on the rear package shelf with some velcro (provided with the kit). I set it right next to the XM receiver in a little empty spot that looks like it was made for it.
The pigtail provided is very high quality, using the same fasteners as the factory harness with the little blue clip that locks the connector in.
The wire that your iPod plugs into didn't look long enough to run under the doors and into the center console, so I ran it under the side of the rear seat, out the center of the lower rear cushion and into the center console.
As far as the display, it looks stock:
You press and hold the bottom preset button for a few seconds and it switches to iPod mode. Doing it again switches back to XM. I've only played with it briefly, but it seems to go right back to the song I was listening to, even after disconnecting the iPod, updating the playlists on my PC, then plugging it back in the car. Nice.
The "seek/scan" button changes songs one at a time, and turning the tuning knob skips forward or back 10 tracks. Pressing the tuning knob in brings up a Playlist selection screen that lets you choose which playlist to listen to. (I have my iPod organized by Genre, but you could just as easily organize it by Artist or Album- that's up to how you configure your playlists, not the kit.)
I'm extremely happy with it. Sound quality is excellent- way better than XM, and to my ears better than some CDs I've burned with iTunes.
That's about all I can think of. Any other questions out there?
