Since the STS-V uses the same differential as the V, and the STS-V has more (stock) HP, are you seeing the same failures as the V?
Are you seeing less because the STS-V is an automatic?
No flame please.

No flame please. | You're definitely on to something there. Some other contributing factors:
Rear End gear size
Rear Wheel Size
Two piece drive shaft (our drive shaft can actually "shock" the rear with power)
Torque curve (is it a low end or high end car?)
Torque management software?
The CTS-V has the worst of all worlds. You couldn't design a rear end to fail more often or more severly. I'm serious. Our V's are designed to fail from the start. |

Article from GM High-Tech Performance--CTS-V Differential!! Anybody got a picture of this damned rear diff.??? Can't we get Vinny from Orange County to make us one up on the C&C machine?? Just use some of that super strong titanium/kevlar/carbon fiber stuff. |

Paulie could come to your house to install it while Paul Sr. yells at him.
And Mikey, well, he can come over too and take a nap on your couch. |

Article from GM High-Tech Performance--CTS-V Differential!! If anyone is going to get anywhere with GM as for a long time solution... The word has to reach out way beyond this forum. A contact high up in the GM service bulliten chain is going to have to be established, and giving all of the proof. I'm sure GM has some division that is clearly in charge of just testing, and then writting all of these service bullitens... Where do you think they come from, who finds all of these problems... Who authorizes the printing and posting of these bullitens? Perhaps these folks should be contacted.. Just an idea.. |

No flame please. | Missed this post earlier...
We haven't seen a single failure in a STS-V... We've sold several and have had them in for different concerns but no rear differential concerns...
If I had to guess I would say that the automatic transmission helps... The STS-V customers that we have dealt with are a different "style" of driver also... (No flame intended)

So a motor with more HP drivng the same diff, on a heavier car (with an automatic transmission) works (so far).
Humm............
Hard launch+bang through gears= diff pieces.

Driveshaft has been replaced, but I still feel a high frequency vibration at 60MPH.
Anyone have any ideas? |

Article from GM High-Tech Performance--CTS-V Differential!! I had the exact same problem at the exact same speed. The tech thought driveshaft, but it turned out to be the transmission! Engineering said this was a known problem, but at the time there was no bulletin out on it.
The tech replaced my transmission and the problem disappeared.

If it's the transmission it usually only does it in 6th gear... If you are driving in 6th and feel the vibration down shift to 5th. If the vibration goes away it's the transmission... |
